{"id":37847,"date":"2021-06-07T08:18:09","date_gmt":"2021-06-07T08:18:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=37847"},"modified":"2021-06-07T08:18:36","modified_gmt":"2021-06-07T08:18:36","slug":"the-south-asian-monsoon-in-the-time-of-a-pandemic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2021\/06\/07\/the-south-asian-monsoon-in-the-time-of-a-pandemic\/","title":{"rendered":"The South Asian monsoon in the time of a pandemic"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>The South Asian monsoon in the time of a pandemic<\/h4>\n<p>The start of June marks the onset of the South Asian summer monsoon.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2018\/04\/26\/landslides-monsoon-variation-1\/\">As I have noted previously, this is by far the most important annual global process in terms of landslides<\/a>.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2015\/05\/18\/nepal-and-the-sw-monsoon-1\/\">The monsoon typically strengthens reasonably quickly through June, peaking in mid-July, and then slowly declining through to the autumn<\/a>.\u00a0 In landslide terms, the events mostly occur when the monsoon reaches the hills of Sri Lanka, Kerala in W India and the Himalayan Arc across the north of South Asia.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/mausam.imd.gov.in\/imd_latest\/contents\/monsoon.php\">The monsoon advances from the southeast<\/a>, so Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are often affected first.<\/p>\n<p>Over the weekend, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.devdiscourse.com\/article\/headlines\/1601309-two-die-in-landslide-at-rohingya-camp-as-bangladesh-monsoon-begins\">heavy rainfall in Bangladesh caused landslides<\/a> and extensive flooding and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jagonews24.com\/en\/international\/news\/56313\">landslides killed a number of people in Sri Lanka<\/a>.\u00a0 Thus, the impacts of the monsoon are starting to be felt.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_37850\" style=\"width: 651px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-37850\" class=\"wp-image-37850 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2021\/06\/21_06-Bangladesh-1.jpg\" alt=\"A 2019 monsoon landslide in a Rohingya refugee camp in Bangladesh. Image from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.prothomalo.com\/bangladesh\/bangladesh-in-world-media\/two-die-in-landslides-at-rohingya-camp-as-bangladesh-monsoon-begins\">https:\/\/en.prothomalo.com\/<\/a>.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>The monsoon this year is going to be different.\u00a0 There is nothing unusual meteorologically as far as I&#8217;m aware, but in South Asia civil society is under severe stress.\u00a0 The two most affected countries in South Asia in terms of landslides are India and Nepal, both of which are being desperately impacted by Covid-19, with hospitals operating beyond capacity.\u00a0 The population will be especially vulnerable this year, and supply chains are very stretched.\u00a0 Thus, it is reasonable to expect that the impacts of the monsoon may be more severe than normal.<\/p>\n<p>In Bangladesh, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2018\/06\/12\/rohingya-2\/\">vulnerability has been increased by the continued presence of the large displaced Rohingya population<\/a>, living in camps that are affected by landslides.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailystar.net\/backpage\/news\/2-rohingyas-killed-landslides-2105529\">It is salient to note that two people were killed in landslides in these camps over the weekend<\/a>.\u00a0 And in Myanmar \/ Burma, the massive civil unrest following the coup earlier this year is also likely to have raised vulnerability.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?s=myanmar&amp;submit.x=0&amp;submit.y=0&amp;mswhere=blog\"> Mining-induced landslides are particular problem there,<\/a> a result of both poor regulation and scavenging driven by economic disadvantage.\u00a0 The coup is unlikely to have reduced the impact of either of these two issues, but reliable reporting of landslides may have become more difficult.<\/p>\n<p>In summary we are heading into the unknown in terms of South Asian summer monsoon this year, but I fear that it could well be a bad one.<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The South Asian monsoon in the time of a pandemic: the impacts of the severe Covid-19 wave in India and Nepal mean that vulnerability of landslides is likely to be high.<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on wp_trim_excerpt --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on wp_trim_excerpt --><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":22,"featured_media":37850,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[740],"tags":[469,979,72],"class_list":["post-37847","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-landslide-costs","tag-featured","tag-monsoon","tag-south-asia"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/37847","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/22"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=37847"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/37847\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/37850"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=37847"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=37847"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=37847"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
