Image copyright <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planet.com\/\">Planet Labs<\/a>, used with permission.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>The slide is large &#8211; from the crown to the channel it is about 1.6 km, and from the crown to the toe it is about 4 km.<\/p>\n<p>The landslide is not thought to pose a direct threat to the communities downstream, fortunately, although there is some risk to users of the river as break-up of the ice is now unpredictable.<\/p>\n<p>The news reports describes this as having occurred in an area of clay.\u00a0 The form of the landslide suggests that it could be a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?s=quick+clay&amp;submit.x=0&amp;submit.y=0&amp;mswhere=blog\">quick clay \/ sensitive clay failure<\/a>.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/north\/landslide-cree-inuit-northern-quebec-1.6002865\">CBC has a splendid video shot from a helicopter that flew the length of the landslide<\/a>.\u00a0 This is a still from that video:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_37515\" style=\"width: 809px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-37515\" class=\" wp-image-37515\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2021\/04\/21_04-Great-Whale-River-3.jpg\" alt=\"The landslide on the Great Whale River.
