{"id":37493,"date":"2021-04-26T07:25:17","date_gmt":"2021-04-26T07:25:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=37493"},"modified":"2021-04-26T07:25:17","modified_gmt":"2021-04-26T07:25:17","slug":"pantai-remis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2021\/04\/26\/pantai-remis\/","title":{"rendered":"The 21 October 1993 Pantai Remis landslide in Malaysia: an upscaled video"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>The 21 October 1993 Pantai Remis landslide in Malaysia: an upscaled video<\/h4>\n<p>Early in the days of this blog <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2008\/05\/28\/sichuan-what-does-a-landslide-look-like-in-reality\/\">I posted about an extraordinary video of a landslide in Malaysia<\/a>.\u00a0 Almost thirteen years on this video remains hard to beat.\u00a0 The recording in question shows the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pantai_Remis_landslide\">21 October 1993 Pantai Remis landslide in Malaysia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This was a very unusual failure that occurred in an open cast tin mine near to the coast.\u00a0 Mining operations ventured too close to the sea, eventually triggering a collapse of the quarry walls.\u00a0 Ultimately the sea flooded the mine, creating a new cove that is still visible on Google Earth.<\/p>\n<p>The video captures the collapse sequence of the Pantai Remis landslide.\u00a0 The failures occurred as massive rotational slides that transition into highly mobile flows through liquefaction.\u00a0 The mine quarry flooded catastrophically and completely.\u00a0 But the drawback of this video was that the quality was poor.<\/p>\n<p>However, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3EXyyg-2RnA\">Jaren Christopher Kelley has posted a new version of the video to Youtube<\/a>.\u00a0 This has been upscaled from the original, greatly improving the quality.\u00a0 You should be able to see the video below:<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Upscaled Malaysia Landslide and flood from the Pantai Remis open air mine, 1993\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3EXyyg-2RnA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer;
