{"id":37483,"date":"2021-04-23T14:17:35","date_gmt":"2021-04-23T14:17:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=37483"},"modified":"2021-04-23T14:17:35","modified_gmt":"2021-04-23T14:17:35","slug":"phong-dien-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2021\/04\/23\/phong-dien-1\/","title":{"rendered":"The 13 October 2020 landslide in Phong Dien, Vietnam, triggered by an extraordinary rainfall event"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>The 13 October 2020 landslide in Phong Dien, Vietnam, triggered by an extraordinary rainfall event<\/h4>\n<p>On 13 October 2020 heavy rainfall triggered a rapid landslide at Phong Dien in Thua Thien Hue, Vietnam.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2020\/10\/14\/rao-trang\/\">I covered this event at the time &#8211; it was a double tragedy as the landslide killed 13 members of a rescue team en route to another landslide accident<\/a>.\u00a0 A paper (<a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s10346-021-01663-z\">Van Tien <em>et al.<\/em> 2021<\/a>) has just been published in the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/journal\/10346\"><em>Landslides<\/em><\/a> that provides a description of this event.<\/p>\n<p>The events started with a landslide at the construction site of the <a href=\"https:\/\/vietnamnet.vn\/en\/sci-tech-environment\/rao-trang-3-accident-suggests-a-reconsideration-of-small-hydropower-projects-685352.html\">Rao Trang-3 hydropower plant<\/a> on 12 October 2020.\u00a0 This landslide killed 17 people.\u00a0 A rescue team was dispatched to assist in the rescue and recovery operation.\u00a0 The team stopped for the night at a location that is described as Ranger Station-7, situated in Phong Dien, c.10 km from the Rao Trang-3 site.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s10346-021-01663-z\">Van Tien <em>et al.<\/em> (2021)<\/a> describe an extraordinary amount of rainfall.\u00a0 At the nearby A Luoi rainfall station, a total of 2190.2 mm was recorded in the period 6-12 October 2020.\u00a0 The landslide at Ranger Station-7 occurred at midnight on 13 October.\u00a0 The landslide is located at 16.434\u00b0, 107.311\u00b0. The landslide took place on an average slope of 21\u00b0 with a poor vegetation cover. The lower slope is quite gentle, with an angle of 18\u00b0, while the slope angle of the upper part is 27\u00b0. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>The landslide length was 546 m, with a volume of 81,500 m<sup>3<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>The authors suggest that failure occurred initially in a block downslope of the final crown of the landslide &#8211; a section that they call Block I:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_37488\" style=\"width: 809px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-37488\" class=\" wp-image-37488\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2021\/04\/21_04-Ranger-2.jpg\" alt=\"The failure process of the 13 October 2020, deadly landslide in Phong Dien, Vietnam.
