href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2011\/09\/20\/update-on-the-earthquake-in-the-himalayas-plus-typhoon-roke-an-earthquake-in-guatemala-and-landslides-in-china-and-italy\/\">As expected<\/a>, the death toll from the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2011\/09\/18\/first-news-the-earthquake-in-india-nepal-and-bhutan-this-afternoon\/\">Tapeljung (Nepal) earthquake<\/a> continued to rise yesterday.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.inewsone.com\/2011\/09\/21\/sikkim-quake-toll-rises-to-61\/77986\">Latest reports suggest<\/a> that 61 people died in Sikkim, <a href=\"http:\/\/daily.bhaskar.com\/article\/NAT-TOP-sikkim-quake-death-toll-climbs-to-92-pm-takes-stock-of-situation-2447535.html\">plus<\/a> 12 in West Bengal, nine in Bihar, 11 in Nepal and seven in Tibet, generating a total of 91 deaths so far.\u00a0 However, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/hostednews\/ap\/article\/ALeqM5h42DUz2DrNGqJwH-LOkOcopB7N8w?docId=bf046a3c598e4138a2d44b0d80e392f8\">AP is now reporting<\/a> that there are fears that a landslide buried a further 40 people at a construction site for a hydroelectric plant at the town of Saffo on the Teesta River.\u00a0 Presumably this is the project described<a href=\"http:\/\/www.teestaurja.com\/project.html#nogo\"> in this website<\/a> &#8211; it will be interesting to see how this story develops.\u00a0 It is unclear to me at the moment whether the reported death toll for Sikkim includes the 12 workers known to have died at the site.<\/p>\n<p>Landslides continue to hinder the emergency operations, as described in <a href=\"http:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/india\/Where-rocks-are-more-dangerous-than-canons\/articleshow\/10059527.cms\">this news report<\/a>.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/ibnlive.in.com\/news\/north-sikkim-still-inaccessible-82-dead\/185967-3.html\">Some news reports suggest<\/a> that two soldiers (Jawans, meaning infantryman, in the local terminology) have been killed during the landslide removal operations.\u00a0 Finally, the <a href=\"http:\/\/savethehills.blogspot.com\/2011\/09\/69-richter-earthquake-in-darjeeling.html\">Save the Hills blog now has a very thoughtful, and indeed thought-provoking, piece<\/a> on the experience of living through the earthquake in Darjeeling.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, there has been little coverage of the damage in Bhutan, but <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kuenselonline.com\/2010\/modules.php?name=News&amp;file=article&amp;sid=20852\">Kuensel provides details<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Typhoon Roke and the landslide dams on the Kii Peninsular in Japa<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong>Meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2011\/09\/20\/update-on-the-earthquake-in-the-himalayas-plus-typhoon-roke-an-earthquake-in-guatemala-and-landslides-in-china-and-italy\/\">typhoon Roke<\/a> is just about to make landfall in Japan (image from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tropicalstormrisk.com\/\">Tropical Storm Risk<\/a>):<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-3674\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2011\/09\/21\/the-earthquake-in-the-himalayas-typhoon-roke-and-landslides-in-guatemala-and-rwanda\/11_09-typhoon-roke-2\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3674\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/09\/11_09-typhoon-roke-2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"580\" height=\"714\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/a>Colin Stark drew my attention to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.leafsystem.co.jp\/KKR\/\">real-time monitoring of the landslide dams<\/a>, which suggests that all four are behaving in an interesting manner!\u00a0 The graphs below show the measured water levels in the lake with time.\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.leafsystem.co.jp\/KKR\/newAT.html\">Akatani dam<\/a> appears to have overtopped and breached:<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-3675\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2011\/09\/21\/the-earthquake-in-the-himalayas-typhoon-roke-and-landslides-in-guatemala-and-rwanda\/11_09-akatani-dam-1\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3675\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/09\/11_09-Akatani-dam-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"251\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.leafsystem.co.jp\/KKR\/newIY2.html\">Iwo dam<\/a> appears to have also overtopped, although less spectacularly:<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 639px) 100vw, 639px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile the other two (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.leafsystem.co.jp\/KKR\/newKD.html\">KD<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.leafsystem.co.jp\/KKR\/newNT.html\">NT<\/a>) are intact but showing a very rapid increase in water level, but note that the monitoring for the first appears to have failed:<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-3677\" 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It will be very interesting to see how these dams perform over the next few hours.\u00a0 Meanwhile, the storm is likely to bring very heavy rainfall over the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2011\/03\/11\/first-reports-of-the-m-8-9-earthquake-in-japan\/\">Tokuku earthquake are<\/a>a, which could induce many landslides in this region as well.\u00a0 Fortunately at the moment the storm is quite fast-moving, which may reduce the rainfall impacts a little.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jma.go.jp\/en\/radnowc\/\">Rain radar images are available online<\/a>; at the time of writing the picture looks rather grim for the earthquake affected areas:<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-3679\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2011\/09\/21\/the-earthquake-in-the-himalayas-typhoon-roke-and-landslides-in-guatemala-and-rwanda\/11_09-roke-radar-1\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3679\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/09\/11_09-Roke-radar-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"522\" A landslide in Guatemala<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2011\/09\/21\/us-guatemala-landslide-idUSTRE78K0TH20110921\">Reuters reports<\/a> that a landslide in Guatemala yesterday killed 15 people &#8211; of which three bodies (all children) have been recovered so far.\u00a0 This slide occurred a day after the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2011\/09\/20\/update-on-the-earthquake-in-the-himalayas-plus-typhoon-roke-an-earthquake-in-guatemala-and-landslides-in-china-and-italy\/\">earthquakes<\/a> that also triggered at least one landslide, though it is unclear as to whether there is a link.\u00a0 It appears that this is more likely to have been rainfall-induced.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4.
