{"id":36575,"date":"2021-02-08T15:33:53","date_gmt":"2021-02-08T15:33:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=36575"},"modified":"2021-02-09T21:19:17","modified_gmt":"2021-02-09T21:19:17","slug":"chamoli-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2021\/02\/08\/chamoli-2\/","title":{"rendered":"The catastrophic landslide and flood in Chamoli in Uttarakhand: the sequence of events"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>The catastrophic landslide and flood in Chamoli in Uttarakhand: the sequence of events<\/h4>\n<p>Deciphering the sequence of events that lead to the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2021\/02\/07\/chamoli-1\/\">terrible debris flow \/ flood in Chamoli yesterday<\/a> was quite a challenge, especially on a Sunday.\u00a0 However, a combination of the willingness of a number of people to use their expertise, and the availability of daily satellite imagery from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planet.com\/\">Planet Labs<\/a>, meant that we had the sequence determined within 8 hours of the event.\u00a0 This is remarkable &#8211; the landslide occurred in a very remote location, and the infrastructure was severely damaged.\u00a0 It took us a few days to understand the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2012\/05\/23\/understanding-the-seti-river-landslide-in-nepal\/\">2012 Seti landslide in Nepal<\/a>, which was similar to this one.\u00a0 Now we can do this in a few hours.<\/p>\n<p>So, for clarity, I thought it would be helpful to lay out the sequence events.\u00a0 I am going to lean heavily on Twitter, but these tweets come from a combination of world experts and citizen scientists.\u00a0 I have no doubt that this is the true story of what happened, but there are details to understand still.<\/p>\n<h4>1. For a few months a large failure had been developing in the high mountains<\/h4>\n<p>Although we did not detect it, high in the mountains at 30.339, 79.731 a large crack was developing on the flank of one of the high peaks over a few months.\u00a0 <del>I believe that this is Trisul, but there is some uncertainty about the names of the peaks<\/del>.\u00a0 It is now clear that this mountain was Nanda Ghunti.\u00a0 This crack was detected after the event in a sequence of Sentinel satellite images by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/pyjeo\">Julien Seguinot<\/a>.\u00a0 At the end of the sequence the unstable block is clearly visible:<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/pyjeo\/status\/1358480152682987523<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>These cracks defined the block that failed.<\/p>\n<h4>2. On the morning of 7 February 2021 the block collapsed in an enormous landslide<\/h4>\n<p>The failure of this block shows up very clearly in a satellite image collected later in the day by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planet.com\/\">Planet Labs<\/a>.\u00a0 It was first identified by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WaterSHEDLab\">Dr Dan Shugar<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/WaterSHEDLab\/status\/1358437031802593280<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>The best view of this has been provided by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CScottWatson\">Scott Watson<\/a>:-<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">3D rendering of @planetlabs image collected 7th Feb showing the source of the Uttarakhand disaster located by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WaterSHEDLab?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@WaterSHEDLab<\/a>. The landslide entrained stagnant ice and glacial debris<\/h4>\n<p>Down valley (to the north) the rock avalanche was able to entrain a vast amount of water and sediment.\u00a0 The most likely source for this was identified by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MattWestoby\">Matt Westoby<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">It&#39;s late, and I&#39;m squinting, but looks to be ~3.5km-worth of stagnant glacier\/ice-cored moraine downstream of the point where the avalanche hit the valley floor. If so, there&#39;s your source of additional water for flow bulking. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/cuGMRCxXGC\">pic.twitter.com\/cuGMRCxXGC<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Matt Westoby (@MattWestoby) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MattWestoby\/status\/1358520362762461187?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 7, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>It seems likely that much of this material was the remains of previous landslides and some glacial material.\u00a0 The rock avalanche will have generated a huge amount of heat and will have induced fragmentation.\u00a0 The ice will have been entrained into the flow, crushed and melted, allowing the landslide to transition to a debris flow.\u00a0 The volume will have continued to increase as the landslide rushed to the north.<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<h4>4. The flow followed the valley to the west, and struck the populated areas<\/h4>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planet.com\/\">Planet Labs<\/a> images show that the landslide swung round to the west, and raced down the valley. You can see this very clearly in one of the videos:<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/LicypriyaK\/status\/1358318430940585987<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately there were many people working on the river floor, and in tunnels, as part of the two hydroelectric power schemes in the Chamoli area.\u00a0 This appears to account for the majority of the human losses.\u00a0 Rescue operations continue.<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<h4>Misinformation and conspiracies<\/h4>\n<p>Whilst the cause of this event is clearly established, the media is continuing to publish stories that this was a glacial collapse, or an avalanche, or a GLOF.\u00a0 There was real uncertainty at the start, but we have known what happened for 24 hours now.\u00a0 This is quite unfortunate.\u00a0 I hope that this post will set the record straight.<\/p>\n<p>This is important as a set of conspiracies are starting to emerge as to the cause of this landslide.\u00a0 For example, there are suggestions that such an event cannot occur in winter, meaning that it was dynamite that triggered the disaster.\u00a0 Some sources are linking this to activities by China.<\/p>\n<p>This is not the case.\u00a0 This was a classic progressive failure in mountain flank.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2020\/04\/17\/salkantay-planet-labs-2\/\">We have seen similar events elsewhere<\/a>.\u00a0 It is fair to say though that these events might be increasing in frequency as a result of climate change.<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<h4>Acknowledgement<\/h4>\n<p>Planet Team (2021).
