Image copyright Planet Labs, used with permission.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>The valley with the road marked is the one containing Raini (located where steep bends are seen in the east) and Tapovan, as shown in the first image in this post.<\/p>\n<p>In many ways this event is similar to the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2012\/05\/23\/understanding-the-seti-river-landslide-in-nepal\/\">2012 Seti River flood in Nepal<\/a>.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2012\/05\/12\/more-information-on-the-landslide-that-caused-the-seti-flood-in-nepal\/\">That was also triggered by a giant rockslope failure,<\/a> from the Annapurna massif, which transitioned into a catastrophic flood.<\/p>\n<p>Hopefully we will get further images soon of the upstream areas to understand this event (and of course to determine the risk of another event), but it is now clear that this was a landslide.\u00a0 In the meantime, rescue operations are underway.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/india\/uttarakhand-glacier-burst-in-chamoli-damages-hydropower-plant-rescue-operations-underway\/articleshow\/80732809.cms\">Reports suggest about 10 bodies have been recovered<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2021\/02\/08\/chamoli-2\/\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><b>I have posted detail of the sequence of events on a new blog post here.<\/b><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Reference<\/h4>\n<p>Planet Team (2020).
