Satellite images of the wildfire areas of western USA<\/h4>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2020_Western_United_States_wildfire_season\">2020 wildfire season in the western part of the USA<\/a> has burnt over 33,000 square kilometres of land, killing at least 37 people.\u00a0 These fires, which have been associated with record-breaking heat, have had a devastating effect.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2020\/10\/08\/post-wildfire-mudslide-potential-in-the-pacific-west\/\">In early October I posted some satellite imagery, collated by loyal reader Ken, showing the extent of the burnt areas<\/a>.\u00a0 This post provides an update.<\/p>\n<p>Ken has now undertaken the huge task of creating a mosaic of the images, derived from the Sentinel-2 satellites, and then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=SdTztwbBX-8\">collating these into a video that he has posted to Youtube<\/a>:-<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Oregon, California Wildfires, 2020, False-color Infrared Satellite Image Mosaic, v2, Footprints\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SdTztwbBX-8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>For each area the video provides an overview of the fires (which appear a light brown in these false colour images) and then provides a detailed view of the largest of them.\u00a0 This, for example, is the Archie Creek Fire:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_35731\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-35731\" class=\" wp-image-35731\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2020\/12\/20_12-Wildfire-1.jpg\" alt=\"The Archie Creek wildfire scar\" width=\"800\" height=\"486\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2020\/12\/20_12-Wildfire-1.jpg 1856w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2020\/12\/20_12-Wildfire-1-300x182.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2020\/12\/20_12-Wildfire-1-1024x622.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2020\/12\/20_12-Wildfire-1-768x467.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2020\/12\/20_12-Wildfire-1-1536x934.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-35731\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Archie Creek wildfire scar. Image using ESA Sentinel-2 imagery, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=SdTztwbBX-8\">extracted from a video on Youtube by loyal reader Ken<\/a>.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>The scale of the area that has been left vulnerable to landslides from these fires is staggering.\u00a0 In 2018, California suffered extremely damaging mudslides in this situation; this winter the vulnerable area is much larger.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/abc7news.com\/mudslide-risk-bay-area-landslide-map-california-fire-season-months-wildfires\/6676166\/\">Efforts are underway to assess the hazard<\/a>.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/weather.com\/news\/news\/2020-10-21-mudslide-risk-after-california-wildfires-landslide-debris-flow\">The Weather Channel has a good article outlining the perils that could lie ahead<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Of course the way that this pans out will depend heavily on the rainfall pattern this winter &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weathernationtv.com\/news\/november-la-nina-update-strengthening-continues\/\">the La Nina conditions might for example reduce rainfall in parts of California, but leader to wetter conditions in the northern part of the fire burnt area<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Ken has also posted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=L-pHWnhVTLs\">another video which provides a scene by scene overview of the areas burnt by wildfires in 2020<\/a>:-<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Oregon, California Wildfires, November 2020, False-color Infrared Satellite Image Mosaic\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/L-pHWnhVTLs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<h4>Acknowledgement<\/h4>\n<p>Many thanks to Ken for the many hours of work that have gone into compiling this information.<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Landslide potential this winter?
