{"id":35486,"date":"2020-11-09T07:54:24","date_gmt":"2020-11-09T07:54:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=35486"},"modified":"2020-11-09T07:54:24","modified_gmt":"2020-11-09T07:54:24","slug":"san-cristobal-verapaz","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2020\/11\/09\/san-cristobal-verapaz\/","title":{"rendered":"San Cristobal Verapaz: the deadly landslide in Guatemala triggered by Hurricane Eta"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>San Cristobal Verapaz: the deadly landslide in Guatemala triggered by Hurricane Eta<\/h4>\n<p>Over the weekend more information has emerged about the large, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2020\/11\/06\/hurricane-eta\/\">deadly landslide that struck San Cristobal Verapaz in Guatemala last week<\/a>.\u00a0 The landslide, in an area that is remote and steep, destroyed a number of houses in the village of Queja.\u00a0 Unfortunately the area continues to be affected by heavy rainfall, and further landslides are occurring, disrupting the rescue and putting further lives at risk.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of understanding this landslide, the two best images that I have found to date are below.\u00a0 The first, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cp24.com\/world\/eta-expected-to-be-hurricane-and-strike-florida-keys-1.5179834\">published on CP24<\/a>, provides a good oversight of the source area of the landslide:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_35489\" style=\"width: 808px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-35489\" class=\" wp-image-35489\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2020\/11\/20_11-Queja-1.jpg\" alt=\"San Cristobal Verapaz landslide\" width=\"798\" height=\"447\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2020\/11\/20_11-Queja-1.jpg 960w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2020\/11\/20_11-Queja-1-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2020\/11\/20_11-Queja-1-768x430.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 798px) 100vw, 798px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-35489\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The landslide at San Cristobal Verapaz in Guatemala. Image by Esteban Biba\/Pool Photo via AP, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/live-news\/20201108-eta-hits-cuba-with-strong-winds-rain\">published by France 24<\/a>.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>This is the lower portion of the landslide; I suspect from other images that this has derived from the upper failure shown in the first image.\u00a0 Here the landslide appears to be a rockslide or possibly even a flow.\u00a0 Note the amount of standing water on the surface, but also the large boulders.\u00a0 The damage to the structures is clear; any building in the direct path would have been destroyed.<\/p>\n<p>The number of people killed at San Cristobal Verapaz is not yet clear &#8211; to date only three victims have been recovered.\u00a0 However, on Friday President Alejandro Giammattei indicated up to 150 people might have been buried in the landslide.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsamericasnow.com\/latin-america-news-guatemala-newst-today\/\">One woman has reportedly lost 22 family members in the disaster<\/a>:-<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAll her family is gone, she\u2019s the only survivor. Her dad, mom, siblings, aunts and uncles, grandparents, they\u2019re all gone.
