{"id":35429,"date":"2020-11-04T10:13:40","date_gmt":"2020-11-04T10:13:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=35429"},"modified":"2020-11-05T07:56:19","modified_gmt":"2020-11-05T07:56:19","slug":"mangapoike-landslide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2020\/11\/04\/mangapoike-landslide\/","title":{"rendered":"The February 2018 Mangapoike landslide, New Zealand: an intriguing failure mechanism?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>The February 2018 Mangapoike landslide, New Zealand: an intriguing failure mechanism?<\/h4>\n<p>On a morning in which the media is full of a landslide that fail to materialise, I can find solace in the real thing.\u00a0 On 24 February 2018 an 8 million cubic metre landslide dammed the Mangapoike River in a remote upland area of eastern North Island in New Zealand. <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2018\/03\/22\/wairoa-1\/\">I blogged about this landslide at the time<\/a> &#8211; it is a rather beautiful example.\u00a0 The height of landslide dam was managed through blasting, although the landslide remains intact, leaving interesting questions about the cause of the failure.
