Landslide sessions at the AGU Fall Meeting in December 2020<\/h4>\n

The AGU Fall Meeting 2020 is almost upon us.\u00a0 This was the first year in several that I had been planning to attend; of course Covid-19 had put paid to that.\u00a0 In consequence the meeting will be virtual and will extend over a much longer period.<\/p>\n

I will be interested to see how it works.\u00a0 The positives of course will be that we are all now used to online meetings; our carbon footprint is hugely reduced; and more people will potentially be able to attend as the costs are so much lower. The negatives will include the loss of face-to-face contact and those informal conversations over a coffee, lunch a drink or a beer; the impacts of time zones causing people to struggle to attend some sessions; and the challenge of blocking out other daily pressures (this will be a big problem for me, given my day job, and many others will face the same, especially in these CoronaVirus times).<\/p>\n

Anyway, I thought I would pull out the main landslide sessions.\u00a0 The times are those in San Francisco:-<\/p>\n

Quickslide 1: Mitigating the Tylorstown coal tip landslide in South Wales, but it isn’t anywhere near enough<\/h4>\n

The Welsh Government has released \u00a32.5 million to pay for the remediation of the Tylorstown coal tip landslide<\/a>, which failed in February. “However, the Welsh government has said the overall cost of the repairs and making Welsh coal tips safe is “significantly more” than \u00a32.5M, with repair work in Rhondda Cynon Taf estimated at \u00a382.5M in total.”<\/p>\n
