Still from footage posted to Youtube by Sky News.<\/p><\/div>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Raw aerial footage of train derailment in Aberdeenshire\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/TJHvF70P074?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>The landslide could of course be obscured by the wreckage or be located off screen.\u00a0 Time will tell, and the accident will be investigated in full.<\/p>\n<p>The Stonehaven accident has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=newssearch&amp;cd=&amp;cad=rja&amp;uact=8&amp;ved=2ahUKEwiAw_-I1pfrAhUGT8AKHZELC0IQ5fUFegQIABAF&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.dailyrecord.co.uk%2Fnews%2Fscottish-news%2Fnetwork-rail-warned-landslips-four-22511554&amp;usg=AOvVaw2lM6xNDpxq2BXMcjEJRiS5\">raised questions about the safety of the UK rail system<\/a>, and in particular the risk of landslides.\u00a0 As usual there is a subtext that in some way the operator of the tracks, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?s=%22network+rail%22&amp;submit.x=20&amp;submit.y=12&amp;mswhere=blog\">Network Rail<\/a>, is failing.\u00a0 I think that is unfair, but that there are reasons to be concerned.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the UK rail system is old &#8211; in many cases really old.\u00a0 The section of the alignment near to Stonehaven on which the accident occurred was built between 1847 and 1850.\u00a0 Of course the track, the signalling, the ballast etc have all been replaced, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.networkrail.co.uk\/stories\/spotlight-on-earthworks\/\">but the earthworks were constructed at that time and in most cases remain extant today<\/a>.\u00a0 This is ageing infrastructure, constructed when understanding of slope stability was low, primarily through trial and error.\u00a0 Huge sections of railway lines in the UK are either on embankments or below cuttings, so Network Rail has 190,000 anthropogenic slopes to manage.<\/p>\n<p>In the years after construction these slopes were actively managed. Gangs would go out to remove excess vegetation, clear drains, etc., and they acted as an early warning system if slopes were deteriorating\u00a0 However, in the latter years of the nationalised British Rail, and in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk\/2001\/jun\/07\/world.comment\">disastrous years of the privatised Railtrack<\/a>, the earthworks were neglected and the slopes deteriorated.\u00a0 In particular, drains were damaged, leading to stability problems.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?client=firefox-b-d&amp;q=network+rail+earthworks\">Network Rail has worked hard to put this right<\/a>.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1877705816305525\">They have sophisticated methods for identifying and monitoring problematic slopes<\/a>, and are really good at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1877705816305525\">re-engineering failing earthworks<\/a>.\u00a0 But the legacy of those years of neglect remains.<\/p>\n<p>Of course there is an additional problem &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.networkrail.co.uk\/communities\/environment\/climate-change-and-weather-resilience\/climate-change-adaptation\/\">climate change.<\/a>\u00a0 The slopes were designed for conditions that differ from the modern situation.\u00a0 In particular, these slopes are now subject to long, very dry spells in which they desiccate and crack, followed by periods of intense rainfall that exceed their drainage capacity.\u00a0 The last few days have seen record-breaking heat followed by very extreme convective rainfall.\u00a0 Some slopes simply cannot cope.<\/p>\n<p>This is not to say that our railways are dangerous &#8211; the Stonehaven accident is the first loss of a rail passenger in a derailment in 13 years, an exceptional record.\u00a0 But we do have to recognise that we have both a legacy and a modern slope problem that will present an increasing level of risk, primarily of disruption.<\/p>\n<p>This can be managed &#8211; Network Rail and their contractors know how to manage and upgrade the slopes throughout the rail network in the UK; they need to be given the resource to do so.<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<h4>Quickslide 1: A landslide in a caravan park in Fife, Scotland<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thescottishsun.co.uk\/news\/scottish-news\/5919567\/scotland-weather-pettycur-bay-caravans-landlide-fife\/\">Heavy rainfall in Scotland also caused a landslide that damaged a set of residential caravans<\/a>.\u00a0 Fortunately, so-one was injured.<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<h4>Quickslide 2: A valley-blocking landslide on the Sakunka River in Canada<\/h4>\n<p>In Canada, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energeticcity.ca\/2020\/08\/landslide-reported-on-the-sukunka-river\/\">a large landslide has created a dam on the Sakunka River south of Chetwynd<\/a>.<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday a rail accident near to Stonehaven in Scotland killed three people.
