{"id":3471,"date":"2011-08-04T20:26:16","date_gmt":"2011-08-04T20:26:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=3471"},"modified":"2011-08-04T20:26:17","modified_gmt":"2011-08-04T20:26:17","slug":"two-important-ongoing-tropical-cyclone-hazards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2011\/08\/04\/two-important-ongoing-tropical-cyclone-hazards\/","title":{"rendered":"Two important ongoing tropical cyclone hazards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tropical cyclone activity finally appears to be recovering, and there are now four developed systems in operation across the globe.\u00a0 Two of these are the potential cause for concern.\u00a0 The larger is typhoon Muifa, which is out in the NW Pacific Ocean.\u00a0 However, its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wunderground.com\/tropical\/tracking\/wp201111.html\">forecast track<\/a> has it strengthening and grazing the coast of eastern China over the next few days:<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-3472\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2011\/08\/04\/two-important-ongoing-tropical-cyclone-hazards\/11_08-muifa-1\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3472\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/08\/11_08-Muifa-1.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/08\/11_08-Muifa-1.gif 640w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/08\/11_08-Muifa-1-300x225.gif 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Current forecasts are that it will pass very close to Shanghai,and concern is already being expressed that the impacts could be substantial.\u00a0 Its track thereafter is hard to predict, but it has the potential to bring heavy rainfall across a wide area.<\/p>\n<p>On the other side of the world, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wunderground.com\/tropical\/tracking\/at201105.html\">Tropical Storm Emily is just crossing Haiti<\/a>, which remains very vulnerable in the aftermath of the earthquake last year:<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-3473\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2011\/08\/04\/two-important-ongoing-tropical-cyclone-hazards\/11_08-emily-1\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3473\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/08\/11_08-Emily-1.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/08\/11_08-Emily-1.gif 640w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/08\/11_08-Emily-1-300x225.gif 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Although only a small storm by tropical cyclone standards, it has the potential to bring very heavy rainfall.\u00a0 Once again the outcomes are unpredictable.\u00a0 It remains very fortunate that Haiti has to date avoided a direct hit from a full strength Hurricane.<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A brief review of two ongoing tropical cyclones &#8211; one in the pacific and one in the Caribbean.
