{"id":34684,"date":"2020-07-22T08:13:20","date_gmt":"2020-07-22T08:13:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=34684"},"modified":"2020-07-22T08:16:25","modified_gmt":"2020-07-22T08:16:25","slug":"quinjiang-river-landslide-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2020\/07\/22\/quinjiang-river-landslide-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Qingjiang River: an unusual valley-blocking landslide in Hubei Province, China"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Qingjiang River: an unusual valley-blocking landslide in Hubei Province, China<\/h4>\n<p>On 20 July 2020 a very large landslide occurred in the Enshi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture in Hubei Province, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?s=china&amp;submit.x=0&amp;submit.y=0&amp;mswhere=blog\">China<\/a>, blocking the Quinjiang River. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.xinhuanet.com\/english\/2020-07\/22\/c_139230399.htm\">The Xinhua report for this event indicates a volume of about 10 million cubic metres<\/a>. The main valley was blocked and a barrier lake developed, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.xinhuanet.com\/english\/2020-07\/21\/c_139230290.htm\">although it has now breached safely<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I cannot find any images of this landslide in the English language media, which is a shame as it is an impressive event.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=%E6%B9%96%E5%8C%97%E6%BB%91%E5%9D%A1&amp;tbm=isch&amp;tbs=qdr%3Ad&amp;client=firefox-b-d&amp;hl=en&amp;ved=0CAEQpwVqFwoTCOCa2eGe4OoCFQAAAAAdAAAAABAC&amp;biw=1709&amp;bih=813#imgrc=1CXcG3sC-ieIGM\">A quick search for Hubei landslide in Chinese<\/a> (<span class=\"tlid-translation translation\" lang=\"zh-CN\"><span class=\"\" title=\"\">\u6e56\u5317\u6ed1\u5761<\/span><\/span>) yields a number of images on Chinese news sites.\u00a0 This is the best overview of the landslide that I have found:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_34687\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34687\" class=\"size-full wp-image-34687\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2020\/07\/20_07-Hubei-1.jpg\" alt=\"Quinjiang River landslide\" width=\"700\" height=\"438\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2020\/07\/20_07-Hubei-1.jpg 700w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2020\/07\/20_07-Hubei-1-300x188.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-34687\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The 20 July 2020 landslide on the Quinjiang River in Hubei Province, China. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hb.xinhuanet.com\/2020-07\/21\/c_1126268046.htm\">Image from Xinhua<\/a>.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>This appears to be a large, mobile <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?s=earthflow&amp;submit.x=0&amp;submit.y=0&amp;mswhere=blog\">earthflow type landslide<\/a>,\u00a0 The nature of the material suggests to me that it is probably a failure in a thick <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?s=loess&amp;submit.x=0&amp;submit.y=0&amp;mswhere=blog\">loess deposit<\/a>, although this needs to be confirmed.\u00a0 The original failure is surprisingly deep-seated and broad, butt appears that there is little or no failure in the underlying bedrock that forms the gorge.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=OkdaCzgXT4A\">There is a good drone video of the landslide on Youtube<\/a>.\u00a0 You will need to excuse the corny music (I recommend that you turn the sound off), but it provides a really good sense of the nature of the failure.\u00a0 The blockage on the Quinjiang River had breached at the time of the video:-<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"\u6e56\u5317\u6069\u65bd\u5c71\u4f53\u6ed1\u5761\u6700\u65b0\u73b0\u573a\u89c6\u9891\uff0c\u60e8\uff01\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OkdaCzgXT4A?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>Chine continues to undergo extremely heavy and prolonged rainfall, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.xinhuanet.com\/english\/2020-07\/22\/c_139231718.htm\">there is another Yellow rainfall warning in place<\/a> today for a large swathe of the country. These conditions are likely to set off an increasing number of landslides.\u00a0 The combination of saturation to a deep level (as the Qingjiang River landslide indicates) and high intensity rainfall (the current forecast includes rates of up to 70 mm per hour) is ideal for promoting slope failure.<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<h4>Quickslide 1: The <span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-1qd0xha r-ad9z0x r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">Skredkallen<\/span> landslide in Norway<\/h4>\n<p>Yesterday, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LandslideLouise\/status\/1285580482772709378\">Louise Vick tweeted some nice images of the <span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-1qd0xha r-ad9z0x r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">Skredkallen<\/span> rock slope failure in Norway<\/a>.\u00a0 I&#8217;d like to visit this one!<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">This summer I FINALLY have time to write up my project on the Skredkallen <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/rockslopefailure?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#rockslopefailure<\/a>. The active slope overlies a large old deposit which displays remnants of marine transgressions.
