{"id":34252,"date":"2020-06-05T06:40:31","date_gmt":"2020-06-05T06:40:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=34252"},"modified":"2020-06-05T13:58:05","modified_gmt":"2020-06-05T13:58:05","slug":"alta-quick-clay-landslide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2020\/06\/05\/alta-quick-clay-landslide\/","title":{"rendered":"The Alta Quick Clay Landslide: further footage"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>The Alta Quick Clay Landslide:- further footage<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1Fmpv8mt4ag\">Further footage has been posted to Youtube showing the Alta Quick Clay landslide on 3 June 2020<\/a>, which <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2020\/06\/04\/alta-quick-clay-landslide-1\/\">I featured yesterday<\/a>:-<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Major Landslide in Alta, Norway (June 3, 2020)\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1Fmpv8mt4ag?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>This new film provides some additional footage of the site prior to the main slide and some drone footage of the aftermath.&nbsp; In both cases the imagery is very revealing.<\/p>\n<p>The early footage was also filmed by Jan Egil Bakkerby, who shot the main video that went viral yesterday. This drone image shows a small secondary failure in the headscarp.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1Fmpv8mt4ag\"> Footage posted to Youtube<\/a>.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>Notable here is the highly mobile nature of the failed material.&nbsp; This material was sufficiently strong to stand in a near-vertical scarp but, once failed, flows like a fluid.&nbsp; This is a good illustration of the very challenging geotechnical properties of quick clay.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, for today, the text accompanying the video suggests that the first failure was observed at this site on 29 May 2020 by the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE).<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<h4>On reflection 1: warnings of further landslides in Norway<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsinenglish.no\/2020\/06\/04\/more-landside-danger-looms-in-alta\/\">NVE has warned that there is the possibility of further landslides in Norway<\/a>.<em> \u201cIt\u2019s important to stress that there\u2019s still a lot of snow in the mountains,\u201d Bj\u00f8rn S\u00f8nju-Moltzau, a hydrologist at state waterways agency NVE, told state broadcaster NRK on Thursday. \u201cWe\u2019ve only gotten rid of around half of it.
