Accounts are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chinadaily.com.cn\/china\/2011-07\/28\/content_12997021.htm\"> here<\/a> and <a href=\"http\/\/www.f-paper.com%2f%3fi644834-Sichuan-Fujiang-manganese-tailings-pollution-by-millions-of-people-affected-by-drinking-water\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> and there are others. The plant is somewhere on the Fujiang river upstream of  Mianyang (31\u00b028&#8217;48.77&#8243;N 104\u00b044&#8217;30.03&#8243;E). Unfortunately the Google Earth  images for most of the Fujiang river between Mianyang and its confluence with  another river at (32\u00b030&#8217;41.44&#8243;N 103\u00b038&#8217;22.45&#8243;E) are of poor quality and I have  not identified a mine site upstream, although I may have overlooked it.<\/p>\n<p>I have not seen what caused the  polluted water to be released although some form of storage pond or dam failure  seems likely.  There was a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2009\/05\/15\/another-chinese-tailings-dam-failure\/\" target=\"_blank\">manganese ore tailings dam failure in  Hunan in 2009<\/a>. The most spectacular tailings dam failure recently was  that of the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2010\/12\/19\/the-outcome-of-a-study-of-the-kolontar-tailings-dam-failure\/\" target=\"_blank\">Kolontar bauxite mine in Hungary last year<\/a> which sent a river  of toxic red sludge into the town.<\/p>\n<p>For mining, contamination risk  and tailings dam failure threat near Lhasa see the paper: Xiang Huang, Mika  Sillanp\u00e4\u00e4, Egil T.
