{"id":33840,"date":"2020-05-06T06:31:04","date_gmt":"2020-05-06T06:31:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=33840"},"modified":"2020-05-06T06:31:04","modified_gmt":"2020-05-06T06:31:04","slug":"srinagar-jammu-national-highway","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2020\/05\/06\/srinagar-jammu-national-highway\/","title":{"rendered":"The Srinagar-Jammu National Highway:- India&#8217;s &#8220;killer highway&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>The Srinagar-Jammu National Highway:- India&#8217;s &#8220;killer highway&#8221;<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/how-kashmir-is-trapped-by-a-killer-highway\/a-53332581\">DW has a very nice article online<\/a> about the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jammu-Srinagar_National_Highway\">Srinagar-Jammu National Highway<\/a>, the main transportation route into the mountainous area of Kashmir in the northwest of<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?s=india&amp;submit.x=0&amp;submit.y=0&amp;mswhere=blog\"> India<\/a>. This 270 km long road, which passes through steep, unstable terrain, regularly appears in my <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jammu-Srinagar_National_Highway\">landslide fatality database<\/a>, especially in the months of the summer monsoon.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/how-kashmir-is-trapped-by-a-killer-highway\/a-53332581\">The article notes<\/a> that the rate of deaths on this road is extraordinarily high, surpassing that of the oft-reported conflict in Kashmir:<\/p>\n<p><em>In 2019, for instance, violence in the Kashmir valley killed 366 people, whereas accidents on the highway claimed at least 447 lives. &#8220;There were at least 252 deaths in and around Udhampur on the northern belt of the road and 195 on the southern belt of Ramban,&#8221; said Liaqat Ahmad, a traffic official working in the Kashmir Valley.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>There are a variety of reasons for these losses of course, not least road traffic accidents, which are a dreadful problem in South Asia. But landslides are a major cause of loss. The scale of the problems on this road can be seen on the Google Earth imagery of the area:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_33843\" style=\"width: 807px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33843\" class=\" wp-image-33843\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2020\/05\/20_05-Kashmir-1-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Jammu-Srinagar National Highway\" width=\"797\" height=\"469\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2020\/05\/20_05-Kashmir-1-scaled.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2020\/05\/20_05-Kashmir-1-300x176.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2020\/05\/20_05-Kashmir-1-1024x602.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2020\/05\/20_05-Kashmir-1-768x452.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2020\/05\/20_05-Kashmir-1-1536x903.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2020\/05\/20_05-Kashmir-1-2048x1205.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 797px) 100vw, 797px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-33843\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Google Earth imagery of landslides on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway in the vicinity of Ramban.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>This image lies just to the west of <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2018\/02\/16\/ramban-1\/\">Ramban, one of the most hazardous part of the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway<\/a> &#8211; this image is at 33.237, 75.258.\u00a0 This is a landscape with many naturally occurring landslides, but the image also shows how poor road engineering and maintenance has destabilised the slopes.<\/p>\n<p>There may be something more subtle here too though.\u00a0 Is the valley following a fault? If so, we would expect to see a higher incidence of landslides than in the surrounding terrain.\u00a0 There are hints in the image that this might be the case.\u00a0 The road is certainly very close to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/312912589_Is_pull-apart_basin_tectonic_model_feasible_for_the_formation_of_Kashmir_basin_NW_Himalaya\/figures?lo=1\">major fault systems that mark the southern edge of the Himalayan tectonic collision<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A major shallow earthquake in this area, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2016\/02\/04\/muzaffarabad-1\/\">similar to that of the 2005 Kashmir earthquake in Pakistan<\/a>, would lead to catastrophic landsliding along this landslides related to mining continues to increase<\/h4>\n<p data-category=\"2\">Depressing news overnight from Liberia, with reports of substantial mining-related landslides. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.xinhuanet.com\/english\/2020-05\/05\/c_139032602.htm\">Xinhua reports at least 45 deaths<\/a> in a mudslide at a goldmine in Grand Cape Mount County on 5 May 2020. <a href=\"https:\/\/frontpageafricaonline.com\/county-news\/landslide-at-illegal-goldmine-traps-over-60-people-in-grand-cape-mount-county\/\">Front Page Africa<\/a> indicates that the toll might be as high as 60 people.\u00a0 Meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/reliefweb.int\/report\/venezuela-bolivarian-republic\/venezuela-landslide-noaa-cpc-media-echo-daily-flash-5-may-2020\">a landslide at a mine in
