{"id":33776,"date":"2020-04-29T06:55:38","date_gmt":"2020-04-29T06:55:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=33776"},"modified":"2020-04-29T14:00:59","modified_gmt":"2020-04-29T14:00:59","slug":"west-pokot-landslides","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2020\/04\/29\/west-pokot-landslides\/","title":{"rendered":"West Pokot: channelised debris flows killed up to 40 people in Kenya on 18 April 2020"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>West Pokot: channelised debris flows killed up to 40 people in Kenya on 18 April 2020<\/h4>\n<p>The team at the new <a href=\"https:\/\/hazmapper.org\/\">Hazmapper tool<\/a> have <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HazMapper\/status\/1255192681849839617?s=20\">tweeted about a set of major landslides that occurred in the West Pokot area of Kenya on 18 April 2020<\/a>.&nbsp; Reports about the impact of these landslides, which primarily hit the villages of Kipchumwa and Chesegon, vary, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.the-star.co.ke\/counties\/rift-valley\/2020-04-28-two-bridges-impassable-after-heavy-rain-kenha-says\/\">The Star<\/a> reports that 29 people have been confirmed to have been killed and a further 20 are missing.&nbsp; Reports also suggest that 18 people were injured and a further 4000 have been displaced. Copyright <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planet.com\/\">Planet Labs<\/a>, used with permission.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>The image shows several channelised flows, in many cases originating from multiple smaller channels high on the hillslopes.&nbsp; It is clear that these flows have spilled out of the channels on the lower slopes, which would explain the high casualty rate.&nbsp; To be caught in such an event is almost unimaginably horrific.<\/p>\n<p>West Pokot is no stranger to these events.&nbsp; Late last year<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2019\/11\/28\/west-pokot-1\/\"> I posted about another set of landslides in this area, on 28-29 November 2019<\/a>, which killed an estimated 50 people.<\/p>\n<p>In the last year I have recorded far more fatal landslides across Africa than has been the case in the past.<\/p>\n<h4>Reference<\/h4>\n<p>Planet Team (2020).
