{"id":3375,"date":"2011-07-27T12:50:27","date_gmt":"2011-07-27T12:50:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=3375"},"modified":"2011-07-28T08:58:22","modified_gmt":"2011-07-28T08:58:22","slug":"devastating-landslides-in-south-korea-and-fears-of-more-to-come","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2011\/07\/27\/devastating-landslides-in-south-korea-and-fears-of-more-to-come\/","title":{"rendered":"Devastating landslides in South Korea &#8211; and fears of more to come"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"..\/2011\/07\/28\/unbelievable-do-watch-this-amateur-footage-of-the-landslides-in-seoul\/\">Update: don&#8217;t miss the video of the Seoul landslides here<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Once again landslides are front page news on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-asia-pacific-14304096\">BBC website<\/a>, this time in relation to devastating events in South Korea today.\u00a0 At the moment it appears that there have been two major events, and possibly a number of smaller ones too.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Overview<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The two big landslides are:<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>1. Chuncheon in Gangwon Province<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>At Chuncheon<a href=\"http:\/\/www.heraldsun.com.au\/news\/breaking-news\/korea-landslides-leave-32-dead-10-missing\/story-e6frf7jx-1226102993409\"> it appears<\/a> that a landslide struck several buildings, including a cabin in which ten college students were killed.\u00a0 A married couple and a convenience store owner also died, and a further 24 people were injured.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>2. Southern Seoul<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>In Southern Seoul another landslide killed 16 people when a set of residences were buried.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Images<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The images available from the two sites are not particularly informative at the moment.\u00a0 As far as I can tell, this <a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/photos\/rescue-workers-walk-past-collapsed-house-swept-landslide-photo-042715291.html\">Reuters image<\/a> shows the toe of the Chuncheon landslide:<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-3376\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2011\/07\/27\/devastating-landslides-in-south-korea-and-fears-of-more-to-come\/11_07-s-korea-1\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3376\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/07\/11_07-S-Korea-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"512\" height=\"324\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/07\/11_07-S-Korea-1.jpg 512w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/07\/11_07-S-Korea-1-300x189.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This image suggests that this was a very mobile mudflow.<\/p>\n<p>The Southern Seoul landslide is rather more enigmatic, but <a href=\"http:\/\/photoblog.msnbc.msn.com\/_news\/2011\/07\/27\/7177502-rising-death-toll-in-south-korean-landslides-flooding\">photoblog<\/a> has an image that appears to show the residences:<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-3377\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2011\/07\/27\/devastating-landslides-in-south-korea-and-fears-of-more-to-come\/11_07-s-korea-2\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3377\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/07\/11_07-S-Korea-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"432\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/07\/11_07-S-Korea-2.jpg 900w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/07\/11_07-S-Korea-2-300x202.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This looks to have been a highly mobile mud \/ debris flow.\u00a0 The damage is horrendous &#8211;
