{"id":33607,"date":"2020-04-08T06:32:49","date_gmt":"2020-04-08T06:32:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=33607"},"modified":"2020-04-08T17:25:23","modified_gmt":"2020-04-08T17:25:23","slug":"denali-national-park-landslides","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2020\/04\/08\/denali-national-park-landslides\/","title":{"rendered":"Denali Park Road: fascinating landslides in a subarctic mountain environment"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Denali Park Road: fascinating landslides in a subarctic mountain environment<\/h4>\n<p>Back in January, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adn.com\/alaska-news\/science\/2020\/01\/18\/active-mass-movements-are-increasing-along-the-denali-park-road-and-may-bury-it\/\">an article in the Anchorage Daily News<\/a> highlighted landslides on Denali Park Road, a high latitude highway through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=1&amp;cad=rja&amp;uact=8&amp;ved=2ahUKEwj-wb37l9joAhUHSxUIHRbyDdMQFjAAegQIARAB&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nps.gov%2Fdena%2Findex.htm&amp;usg=AOvVaw0mGdikPSGlttDw6ExkG74X\">Denali National Park<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?s=alaska&amp;submit.x=0&amp;submit.y=0&amp;mswhere=blog\">Alaska<\/a>.\u00a0 This was based on a <a href=\"https:\/\/agu.confex.com\/agu\/fm19\/meetingapp.cgi\/Paper\/571470\">paper presented at the 2019 AGU Fall Meeting in San Francisco<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/agu.confex.com\/agu\/fm19\/meetingapp.cgi\/Paper\/571470\">Zena Robert<\/a>, a graduate student at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uaf.edu\/uaf\/\">University of Alaska Fairbanks<\/a>.\u00a0 Zena reports on work by National Park staff that has identified over 150 landslides along the 150 km length of the road, many of which are really fascinating.\u00a0 For example, accompanying the article is this image, taken by Zena, of a large-scale slope failure:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_33610\" style=\"width: 809px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33610\" class=\" wp-image-33610\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2020\/04\/20_04-Denali-1.jpg\" alt=\"Landslide on Denali Park Road\" width=\"799\" height=\"638\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2020\/04\/20_04-Denali-1.jpg 1802w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2020\/04\/20_04-Denali-1-300x240.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2020\/04\/20_04-Denali-1-1024x818.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2020\/04\/20_04-Denali-1-768x613.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2020\/04\/20_04-Denali-1-1536x1227.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 799px) 100vw, 799px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-33610\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A large landslide on Landslide on Denali Park Road in Alaska. Image by Zena Robert via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adn.com\/alaska-news\/science\/2020\/01\/18\/active-mass-movements-are-increasing-along-the-denali-park-road-and-may-bury-it\/\">Alaska Daily News<\/a>.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>This is a broadly similar to an active layer detachment slide, and has probably occurred because of summer melting of permafrost, which generates water-saturated, weak materials that are then able to slip on the steep slopes.\u00a0 Note the interesting landslide deposit, also the potential for instability lower on the slope and at the landslide crown.<\/p>\n<p>A further landslide that she highlighted on Denali Park Road is at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/dena\/learn\/nature\/pretty-rocks.htm\">Pretty Rocks area<\/a> on the pass adjacent to Ploychrome Mountain (63.537, -149.815 if you wish to take a look). Their records suggest that this landslide reactivated in 2004, moving at a rate of about 60 cm per year. The rate of movement has increased, and at times in 2019 in was moving at a rate of about 50 mm per day.<\/p>\n<p>Of course this road is inaccessible in the winter because of snow.\u00a0 It will be fascinating to see how the slide has progressed when the road reopens for the summer season.
