Second, as pointed out by <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2020\/04\/01\/luming-mine-tailings-leak\/\">loyal reader Caner in the comments yesterday<\/a>, there has been a recent raising of the height of the tailings dams, which has extended across the intact terrain between the two original structures.\u00a0 It appears that this raising has been undertaken by the upstream method, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining-technology.com\/features\/time-to-talk-about-tailings-dams\/\">which is now widely considered to be problematic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The news reports of the problems suggest that the mine operators are building a road to the location of the problem.\u00a0 I am struggling to see any such construction around the dams themselves.\u00a0 However, there does seem to be a substantive change towards the back of the tailings pond:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_33507\" style=\"width: 809px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33507\" class=\" wp-image-33507\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2020\/04\/20_04-Tailings-3.jpg\" alt=\"Luming Mine tailings accident\" width=\"799\" height=\"538\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2020\/04\/20_04-Tailings-3.jpg 1404w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2020\/04\/20_04-Tailings-3-300x202.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2020\/04\/20_04-Tailings-3-1024x690.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2020\/04\/20_04-Tailings-3-768x517.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 799px) 100vw, 799px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-33507\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.planet.com\/\">Planet Labs<\/a> SkySat image of the aftermath of the Luming Mine accident. Image collected by, and copyright of, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planet.com\/\">Planet Labs<\/a> on 1 April 2020<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>In this area there is clear evidence of work being undertaken and extensive deformation of the tailings including evidence of the formation of a trough and the development of what I would interpret to be tension cracks.<\/p>\n<p>I am no expert on tailings facilities, but has the problem developed at a dewatering well located upstream of the tailings dams?
