{"id":3290,"date":"2011-06-29T17:43:21","date_gmt":"2011-06-29T17:43:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=3290"},"modified":"2011-06-29T17:43:22","modified_gmt":"2011-06-29T17:43:22","slug":"the-mini-tsunami-on-the-south-coast-of-england-a-submarine-landslide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2011\/06\/29\/the-mini-tsunami-on-the-south-coast-of-england-a-submarine-landslide\/","title":{"rendered":"The mini-tsunami on the south coast of England &#8211; a submarine landslide?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A fascinating story has appeared in various news outlets in the Uk over the last few hours.\u00a0 On Monday morning this week the southwest coast of the UK was affected by a highly anomalous marine event.\u00a0 This is covered quite well in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-devon-13955321\">BBC news article<\/a>, which describes &#8220;rivers changing direction, fish leaping out of water and hair standing on end due to static&#8221; and brief tidal anomalies of 0.2 m in Newlyn, Cornwall, 0.3 m in Plymouth and 0.4 m in Portsmouth.\u00a0 The event was also caught on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=cuedSADrSLw\">video in the Yealm estuary near to Plymouth<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Tide run yealm 27 June 2011\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cuedSADrSLw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The various news reports ascribe this event to a submarine landslide.\u00a0 Now, this is quite an interesting event actually.\u00a0 The Google Earth map below shows the seafloor topography in this area and the locations that news reports suggest experienced the &#8220;tsunami&#8221;:<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-3291\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2011\/06\/29\/the-mini-tsunami-on-the-south-coast-of-england-a-submarine-landslide\/10_06-uk-tsunami-1\/\"><\/a><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-3292\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2011\/06\/29\/the-mini-tsunami-on-the-south-coast-of-england-a-submarine-landslide\/10_06-uk-tsunami-1-2\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3292\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/06\/10_06-UK-tsunami-11.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"641\" height=\"424\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/06\/10_06-UK-tsunami-11.jpg 1444w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/06\/10_06-UK-tsunami-11-300x198.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/06\/10_06-UK-tsunami-11-1024x678.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 641px) 100vw, 641px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nA few things to note here.\u00a0 First, the locations that this was reported are widely spaced\u00a0 Second the largest event was reportedly at Portsmouth (which is both a substantial distance to the east and sheltered by the Isle of Wight.\u00a0 Third, the seas offshore the south coast of England are really quite shallow.\u00a0 Fourth, the continental slope, which is the most likely location for a submarine landslide, are well to the west.<\/p>\n<p>To me this is a somewhat strange event that requires some deeper investigation.\u00a0 I wonder if the tsunami was observed on the coast of northwest France &#8211; if this was a continental slope event then it should have been, but I have seen no reports to suggest this.<\/p>\n<p>Certainly something happened to cause this event on Monday, but I think the jury is still out as to what it might have been, and where.<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A short description and video of an intriguing &#8220;mini-tsunami&#8221; off the south coast of England on Monday.
