The landslide, which occurred after a spell of heavy rain, killed an estimated 42 people after it destroyed 20 houses.\u00a0 Eleven people were rescued.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2019\/07\/24\/shuicheng-county-landslide\/\">I blogged about this landslide at the time<\/a>, but now a first scientific account of this landslide (<a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s10346-019-01334-0\">Li <em>et al.<\/em> 2020<\/a>) has been published in the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/journal\/10346\"><em>Landslides<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This was a large slide &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s10346-019-01334-0\">Li <em>et al.<\/em> (2020)<\/a> estimate that it had a total length of about 1,300 m, a vertical extent of about 120 m, a surface area of about 370,000 m\u00b2 and a volume of about 2 million m\u00b3.\u00a0 The authors have generated this annotated orthophoto of the landslide site, which clearly shows the source area of the slip, the transportation and entrainment zone and the landslide deposit:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_32901\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32901\" class=\" wp-image-32901\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2020\/01\/20_01-Shuicheng-1.jpg\" alt=\"Shiucheng County landslide\" width=\"800\" height=\"911\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2020\/01\/20_01-Shuicheng-1.jpg 829w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2020\/01\/20_01-Shuicheng-1-263x300.jpg 263w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2020\/01\/20_01-Shuicheng-1-768x875.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-32901\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">An annotated orthophoto of the 23 July 2019 Shiucheng County landslide in China. Image from <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s10346-019-01334-0\">Li <em>et al.<\/em> (2020)<\/a>.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s10346-019-01334-0\">Li <em>et al.<\/em> (2020)<\/a> describe this as being a rotational landslide, with an initial thickness of about 20 m.\u00a0 This would not have been obvious to me.\u00a0 The authors note that a road passed through the source area, but they do not comment as to whether this might have been a factor in the failure. In the seven days prior to the failure the area experienced three heavy spells of rainfall, totaling about 154 mm.\u00a0 Whilst this is undoubtedly intense, it seems unlikely that this was particularly exceptional.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s10346-019-01334-0\">Li <em>et al.<\/em> (2020)<\/a> note that this slope continues to represent a hazard:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;The field investigation suggests that this slope may fail again in the future under rainfall\/earthquake events.
