{"id":32596,"date":"2019-12-02T08:07:01","date_gmt":"2019-12-02T08:07:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=32596"},"modified":"2019-12-02T08:07:01","modified_gmt":"2019-12-02T08:07:01","slug":"mining-related-landslides","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2019\/12\/02\/mining-related-landslides\/","title":{"rendered":"Losses from mining-related landslides"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Losses from mining-related landslides<\/h4>\n<p>Next Tuesday I will deliver a lecture in Hong Kong that focuses on mining-related landslides.\u00a0 In the latest of my sequence of papers on global losses from landslides, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2018\/08\/24\/global-fatal-landslide-occurrence-1\/\">published last year with my then post-doctoral researcher Melanie Froude<\/a>, we highlighted the increasing levels of global loss from mining and quarrying related landslides.\u00a0 In preparing for the lecture in Hong Kong I have been revisiting the data.<\/p>\n<p>The graph below shows the cumulative total number of mining-related landslides from the start of 2004 to the end of 2018, as recorded in my dataset:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_32599\" style=\"width: 549px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32599\" class=\"size-full wp-image-32599\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2019\/12\/19_12-mining-1.jpg\" alt=\"mining\" width=\"539\" height=\"454\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2019\/12\/19_12-mining-1.jpg 539w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2019\/12\/19_12-mining-1-300x253.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 539px) 100vw, 539px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-32599\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The cumulative total number of mining-related landslides from 2003 to 2018 inclusive.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>The data clear shows an increasing trend through time.\u00a0 This is a complex pattern, and we need to be careful in interpreting the data.\u00a0 For example, it does appear that the number of mining-related landslides that I recorded in the first year might have been anomalously low &#8211; perhaps through 2004 I was still learning how to collect the data.\u00a0 But since then the graph has steepened with time, and by the end of 2018 I had recorded 408 mining-related landslides, causing almost 2,800 deaths.<\/p>\n<p>It is really interesting to try to understand what is driving this change.\u00a0 One way to get at this is to look at the data in terms of location.\u00a0 The sad reality is that the vast majority of fatal mining-related landslides occur outside of Europe, North America and Australia\/New Zealand.\u00a0 This reflects the dramatic effects of mining regulation &#8211; in areas where mining is managed properly landslides are less common, and are far less likely to kill large numbers of people.<\/p>\n<p>The graph below breaks the data for mining-related landslides into four geographical areas:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_32601\" style=\"width: 519px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32601\" class=\"size-full wp-image-32601\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2019\/12\/19_12-mining-2.jpg\" alt=\"mining-related landslides\" width=\"509\" height=\"431\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2019\/12\/19_12-mining-2.jpg 509w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2019\/12\/19_12-mining-2-300x254.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 509px) 100vw, 509px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-32601\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The cumulative total number of mining-related landslides from 2003 to 2018 inclusive, broken down according to four main geographical areas.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>The trends are really interesting.\u00a0 In SE.
