{"id":3258,"date":"2011-06-23T07:36:20","date_gmt":"2011-06-23T07:36:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=3258"},"modified":"2011-06-24T20:10:53","modified_gmt":"2011-06-24T20:10:53","slug":"the-seismic-signature-of-a-large-landslide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2011\/06\/23\/the-seismic-signature-of-a-large-landslide\/","title":{"rendered":"The seismic signature of a large landslide"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"float: left;padding: 5px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.researchblogging.org\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: 0\" src=\"http:\/\/www.researchblogging.org\/public\/citation_icons\/rb2_large_gray.png\" alt=\"ResearchBlogging.org\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>A little under two years ago, on 9th August 2009, Typhoon Morakot triggered a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2010\/02\/02\/the-causes-of-the-shiaolin-landslide-disaster-in-taiwan\/\">catastrophic landslide that destroyed the village of Hsiaolin in southern Taiwan<\/a>, killing over 400 people.\u00a0 I covered this event in detail at the time and later that same year<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2009\/09\/25\/first-images-from-a-visit-to-the-shiaolin-landslide\/\"> visited the site<\/a>.\u00a0 There is a presentation about the typhoon and landslide <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2010\/02\/24\/framlingham-college-presentation-on-the-typhoon-morakot-disaster-in-taiwan\/\">online that can be downloaded<\/a>.\u00a0 The journal Natural Hazards and Earth System Science has just published a paper by Feng (2011) that examines the seismic signal of the landslide.\u00a0 This journal is open access, so the paper can be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nat-hazards-earth-syst-sci.net\/11\/1559\/2011\/nhess-11-1559-2011.html\">downloaded from here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-3259\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2011\/06\/23\/the-seismic-signature-of-a-large-landslide\/09_09-shiaolin-2\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-3259\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/06\/09_09-shiaolin-2-300x197.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"197\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/06\/09_09-shiaolin-2-300x197.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/06\/09_09-shiaolin-2-1024x673.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/06\/09_09-shiaolin-2.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The analysis of the seismic signals associated with landslides is a very interesting research area at the moment.\u00a0 The mechanics of a landslide mean that they have a distinctly different spectral signature to that of earthquakes, meaning that very large events can be detected using global seismic arrays.\u00a0 This provides the possibility of the remote detection of large landslides.\u00a0 Furthermore, analysis of the data can provide information about the time of initiation of the movement and of the duration of the motion, which in turn can be used to analyse landslide velocity.\u00a0 In fact the Hsiaolin landslide demonstrates the value of such an approach &#8211; in the immediate aftermath of the Hsiaolin event there was <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2009\/08\/10\/breaking-news-hundreds-missing-in-taiwan-landslides-after-typhoon-morakot\/\">considerable uncertainty as to whether a large landslide had actually occurred<\/a>, followed by a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2009\/08\/18\/some-reflections-on-the-typhoon-morakot-landslide-disaster-in-taiwan\/\">national scandal<\/a> over the tardiness of the governmental response.\u00a0 However, our understanding of the seismic signal of large landslides remains poor.<\/p>\n<p>The Feng (2011) paper is a welcome contribution to this area, not least because Taiwan operates a remarkably dense array of strong motion instruments.\u00a0 This means that the seismic dataset for Hsiaolin is remarkably good.\u00a0 The paper examines the strong motion record from six broadband seismometers located close to the landslide.\u00a0 The key finding is that the landslide was clearly detectable on the strong motion instruments, and had a very different spectral signature (with the energy being concentrated at 0.5 to 1.5 Hz) to that of earthquakes of a similar magnitude.\u00a0 The\u00a0 stations located closest to the landslide indicated that the movement lasted for about 98 seconds, and movement started at 06:16 local time.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 However,\u00a0 the more distant stations produced notably less good data because of the rapid attenuation of the seismic signals.<\/p>\n<p>As such, this paper is a really interesting contribution to our understanding of the seismic signature of landslides.\u00a0 There is some really very interesting <a href=\"http:\/\/meetingorganizer.copernicus.org\/EGU2011\/EGU2011-5109.pdf\">work being undertaken by Colin Stark and Goram Ekstrom at Columbia University<\/a> exploring the feasibility of a global assessment of very large landslides through remote observation via the global seismic network;
