{"id":32463,"date":"2019-10-22T06:08:18","date_gmt":"2019-10-22T06:08:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=32463"},"modified":"2019-10-22T14:25:07","modified_gmt":"2019-10-22T14:25:07","slug":"kadavu-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2019\/10\/22\/kadavu-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Kadavu, Fiji: Planet Labs images of the earthquake triggered landslides on 19 October"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Kadavu, Fiji: Planet Labs images of the earthquake triggered landslides on 19 October<\/h4>\n<p>On 19 October 2019 a M=5.7 <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?s=earthquake&amp;submit.x=0&amp;submit.y=0&amp;mswhere=blog\">earthquake<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/earthquake.usgs.gov\/earthquakes\/eventpage\/us70005w2i\/executive\">struck the island of Kadavu in Fiji<\/a>.&nbsp; Whilst not a large event, it was sufficient to give the volcano of <span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-1qd0xha r-ad9z0x r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">Nabukelevu (also known as Mount Washington) a decent shake, triggering <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?s=rockslide&amp;submit.x=0&amp;submit.y=0&amp;mswhere=blog\">rockslides<\/a>.&nbsp; These landslides were captured on a very high-quality video taken from the sea, which shows multiple events.&nbsp; The dry volcanic rocks generate a large amount of dust, which accentuates the effects.&nbsp; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vRxMUy8WJls\">The video is on Youtube<\/a>:-<\/span><\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Earthquake in Kadavu shaking Mount Washington [21-Oct-2019]\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vRxMUy8WJls?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On Twitter, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SotisValkan\/status\/1186201525804261376\">Sotiris Valkoniotis (<\/a><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-1qd0xha r-ad9z0x r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SotisValkan\/status\/1186201525804261376\">@SotisValkan) noted that these landslides are visible on Sentinel imagery captured later the same day<\/a>.&nbsp; So, I have taken a look at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planet.com\/\">Planet Labs<\/a> imagery of the area.&nbsp; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planet.com\/\">Planet Labs<\/a> captured a decent image of the site on 20 October 2019, which shows the scars of the landslides:<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_32465\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32465\" class=\"size-full wp-image-32465\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2019\/10\/19_10-Fiji-1-e1571723050383.jpg\" alt=\"Kadavu landslides\" width=\"640\" height=\"462\"\/><p id=\"caption-attachment-32465\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kadavu landslides as captured in a PlanetScope image, dated 20 October 2019.
