{"id":32322,"date":"2019-09-30T06:35:29","date_gmt":"2019-09-30T06:35:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=32322"},"modified":"2019-09-30T06:35:29","modified_gmt":"2019-09-30T06:35:29","slug":"planet-labs-kerala","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2019\/09\/30\/planet-labs-kerala\/","title":{"rendered":"Kerala &#8211; satellite images of the landslides from the summer monsoon"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Kerala &#8211; satellite images of the landslides from the summer monsoon<\/h4>\n<p>As the 2019 summer monsoon draws to a close (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=newssearch&amp;cd=22&amp;cad=rja&amp;uact=8&amp;ved=0ahUKEwjp8pGi9vfkAhVAQUEAHahbB1sQqQIIcygAMBU&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.newindianexpress.com%2Fnation%2F2019%2Fsep%2F28%2Fsix-pilgrims-en-route-to-badrinath-temple-die-in-landslide-in-tehri-garhwal-2040508.html&amp;usg=AOvVaw19XA8xqmJxbEJdOvfqkltP\">although some areas continue to be affected by heavy rainfall<\/a>), cloud is starting to withdraw, providing opportunities to view the landslides that have been triggered by the heavy rainfall in Kerala in August.\u00a0 A week or so ago, <span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-1qd0xha r-ad9z0x r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/rajbhagatt\/status\/1176120767550877696\">Raj Bhagat Palanichamy tweeted some images from Copernicus Sentinel showing some of the landslides<\/a>.\u00a0 I have looked at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planet.com\/\">Planet Labs imagery<\/a> &#8211; some of these landslides are now becoming visible too.\u00a0 The image below shows a set of landslides in the area of Amarambalam (these landslides are in the vicinity of 11.31, 76.48) for example:-<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_32323\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32323\" class=\"size-full wp-image-32323\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2019\/09\/19_09-Kerala-4-e1569822801901.jpg\" alt=\"Kerala landslides \" width=\"640\" height=\"476\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-32323\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Landslides triggered by the 2019 monsoon in Kerala, India. Copyright <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planet.com\/\">Planet Labs<\/a>.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>The most serious landslide occurred at <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2019\/08\/21\/kavalappara-landslide-1\/\">Kavalappara in Wayanad<\/a>, where up to 59 people were killed in a major landslide.\u00a0 Unfortunately, this site has yet to be imaged clearly.\u00a0 However, in the area of Portimund Lake, to the east of the images above, another large landslide can be seen in the Planet Labs images:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_32328\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32328\" class=\"size-full wp-image-32328\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2019\/09\/19_09-Kerala-6-e1569823959678.jpg\" alt=\"Kerala landslides\" width=\"640\" height=\"445\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-32328\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A large landslide in the region of Porthimund lake, triggered by the 2019 monsoon in Kerala, India. Copyright <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planet.com\/\">Planet Labs<\/a>.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>These are typical landslides triggered by exceptional rainfall in hilly terrain.\u00a0 The resultant flows along the channels can be devastating to anything in the path.
