{"id":32156,"date":"2019-09-12T06:40:44","date_gmt":"2019-09-12T06:40:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=32156"},"modified":"2019-09-12T06:40:44","modified_gmt":"2019-09-12T06:40:44","slug":"broomhead","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2019\/09\/12\/broomhead\/","title":{"rendered":"Landslides during the construction of the Morehall and Broomhead reservoirs in Sheffield"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Landslides during the construction of the Morehall and Broomhead reservoirs in Sheffield<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2017\/03\/21\/longdendale-1\/\">I have previously written about the problems that landslide posed to the construction of the Longendale reservoirs in the vicinity of my home town, Sheffield<\/a>.\u00a0 My local paper, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.co.uk\/\">the Sheffield Star<\/a>, has an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.co.uk\/retro\/how-determined-workers-fought-a-landslide-to-build-vital-sheffield-reservoirs-people-undervalue-the-water-we-take-for-granted-541296\">interesting article this week about landslides during the construction of two other reservoirs<\/a>, Morehall and Broomhead, built to supply water to the city in the early part of the 20th Century.\u00a0 The article, written to a highlight a <a href=\"https:\/\/eur01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.theoutdoorcity.co.uk%2Fsheffwalkfest&amp;data=02%7C01%7C%7C2d72a127c507453d245b08d7039f0c30%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C636981853940939839&amp;sdata=7XSgcTxjNQueWiZP3sM949yeWiy6LqSzp8vpO%2Fu%2BQ1g%3D&amp;reserved=0\">guided heritage walk to the sites on Saturday 21st September<\/a>, describes major landslide related construction problems, in particular at Broomhead (location is 53.46, -1.60).\u00a0 Part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.co.uk\/retro\/how-determined-workers-fought-a-landslide-to-build-vital-sheffield-reservoirs-people-undervalue-the-water-we-take-for-granted-541296\">article<\/a> describes these landslides, with the quotations being provided by Mike Atkinson, a former engineer who carried out work on Broomhead Reservoir during his career (Mike will be leading the walk on 21st September):-<\/p>\n<div class=\"sc-kNBZmU bgGXZI\">\n<p><em>In 1924, workers noticed that the hillside towards Yewtrees Lane, north of the Broomhead site, began slipping as an important overflow channel was being dug. &#8220;They realised they needed to do something,&#8221; says Mike. &#8220;They were digging the channel and the ground kept coming towards them.&#8221; A trench was dug in short lengths and a drain up to 50 feet deep was put in, filled with rubble. &#8220;That, together with removing 400,000 cubic yards of soil from the top end of the slip, seemed to stop the movement,&#8221; Mike says.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>This Google Earth image shows the Broomhead reservoir.\u00a0 The slope that caused the problems is the forested area on the far side of the lake:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_32158\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32158\" class=\"size-full wp-image-32158\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2019\/09\/19_09-Broomhead-1-e1568267830373.jpg\" alt=\"Broomhead reservoir\" width=\"640\" height=\"354\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-32158\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Google Earth image of the Broomhead reservoir<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>The problems at this site are documented in some detail in a paper that was published in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icevirtuallibrary.com\/toc\/jince\/current\"><em>Journal of the Institution of Civil Engineers<\/em><\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.icevirtuallibrary.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1680\/ijoti.1944.14044\">Beldelow 1944<\/a>).\u00a0 This paper names the landslide the &#8220;Waldershelf Slip&#8221;.\u00a0 The article documents two phases of movement, with the first starting in 1924 during the construction of the overflow works (which can be seen in the image above).\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icevirtuallibrary.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1680\/ijoti.1944.14044\">Beldelow (1944)<\/a> includes the following cross section through the site &#8211; the slip can be seen on the right side of the diagram, with the inferred slip plane.\u00a0 Note the location in relation to the level of the top of the embankment:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_32161\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32161\" class=\"size-full wp-image-32161\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2019\/09\/19_09-Broomhead-2-e1568268384881.jpg\" alt=\"Broomhead Reservoir\" width=\"640\" height=\"247\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-32161\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cross section through the Broomhead Reservoir, showing the landslide on the right hand side. Diagram from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icevirtuallibrary.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1680\/ijoti.1944.14044\">Bendelow (1944)<\/a>.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>To stabilise the landslide, the engineers constructed a drain to extract water from the landslide and they removed about 300,000 m\u00b3 of material from the upper part of the slope to reduce the driving load.\u00a0 This work was completed in 1928, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icevirtuallibrary.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1680\/ijoti.1944.14044\">Bendelow (1944)<\/a> reports that the works appeared at first to have been successful.<\/p>\n<p>However, in April 1930 further movement was observed on the slope, including cracks through the overflow weir.\u00a0 A very detailed investigation was undertaken of the causes of the instability, including trial pits dug to a depth of up to almost 30 metres!
