{"id":31963,"date":"2019-08-21T01:54:12","date_gmt":"2019-08-21T01:54:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=31963"},"modified":"2019-08-21T14:13:36","modified_gmt":"2019-08-21T14:13:36","slug":"kavalappara-landslide-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2019\/08\/21\/kavalappara-landslide-1\/","title":{"rendered":"The Kavalappara landslide in the western Ghats of India"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>The Kavalappara landslide in the western Ghats of India<\/h4>\n<p>At 7:30 pm on 8th August 2019 the large the Kavalappara landslide in Wayanad, part of the western Ghats in Kerala, India buried a small community.&nbsp; Whilst rescue operations continue, it has been reported that 46 bodies have been recovered from the debris, whilst it is believed that a further 13 people were killed.&nbsp; The landslide was triggered by a period of intense monsoon rainfall.&nbsp; <a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/explained\/how-a-hill-in-the-western-ghats-buried-a-part-of-a-village-in-kerala-kavalappara-landslide-5903013\/\">The Indian Express has some details about the precipitation event that initiated the landslide<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><em>Malappuram meteorological subdivision got 189.4 mm rain from August 1 to August 7, 66% more than the normal 114.3 mm.
