{"id":31937,"date":"2019-08-20T02:39:02","date_gmt":"2019-08-20T02:39:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=31937"},"modified":"2019-08-20T02:39:02","modified_gmt":"2019-08-20T02:39:02","slug":"pingdi-landslide-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2019\/08\/20\/pingdi-landslide-2\/","title":{"rendered":"A high resolution Planet Labs image of the Pingdi landslide in China"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>A high resolution Planet Labs image of the Pingdi landslide in China<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2019\/07\/25\/pingdi-landslide\/\">The 23rd July 2019 Pingdi landslide<\/a> in Shuicheng County in the city of Liupanshui in Guizhou Province, China i<a href=\"http:\/\/www.xinhuanet.com\/english\/2019-07\/29\/c_138267893.htm\">s thought to have killed 51 people<\/a>.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2019\/07\/24\/shuicheng-county-landslide\/\">This was a large, complex landslide associated with heavy rainfall.<\/a>\u00a0 As is usual in China, after the initial reports of the losses and the heroic acts of the rescuers, little information has emerged as to the causes of the landslide.\u00a0 We can expect that it will be analysed in a research paper in due course, but this is unlikely to emerge for a year or so.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.planet.com\/\">Planet Labs<\/a> have however captured a high quality satellite image of the site, which they have kindly made available to me.\u00a0 Once again I am indebted to Rob Simmon for his help with this.\u00a0 The image was captured on 2nd August 2019:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_31939\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31939\" class=\"size-full wp-image-31939\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2019\/08\/19_08-China-1-e1566267464744.jpg\" alt=\"Pingdi landslide\" width=\"640\" height=\"562\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-31939\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planet.com\/\">Planet Labs SkySat image<\/a> of the Pingdi landslide in Guizhou Province China. Image collected on 2nd August 2019, copyright <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planet.com\/\">Planet Labs<\/a>, used with permission.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>There are aspects of this landslide that are interesting:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The road crossing the upper part of the landslide is clear.\u00a0 I have previously suggested that this may have played a role in the initial failure.\u00a0 Note the apparent fresh cuts on the upslope side of the road, suggesting recent widening.\u00a0 It is clear that a number of these cut slopes have also undergone small scale failures.\u00a0 I continue to wonder if this road may have been a key part of the failure process;<\/li>\n<li>There appears to be a number of other smaller-scale failures located in the vicinity of the landslide.\u00a0 This may indicated very localised, extreme rainfall;<\/li>\n<li>The runout behaviour of the toe of the landslide is quite complex, as this part of the image shows:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_31944\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31944\" class=\"size-full wp-image-31944\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2019\/08\/19_08-China-2-e1566268001967.jpg\" alt=\"Pingdi landslide\" width=\"640\" height=\"372\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-31944\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planet.com\/\">Planet Labs SkySat image<\/a> of the toe of the Pingdi landslide in Guizhou Province China. Image collected on 2nd August 2019, copyright <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planet.com\/\">Planet Labs<\/a>, used with permission.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">Further up the slope the landslide track bifurcated and then recombined before running out.\u00a0 On the right side of the images parts of the landslide debris have entered and followed existing channels, in one case crossing and blocking another road,\u00a0 To me this suggests quite high mobility.<\/p>\n<h4>Reference and acknowledgement<\/h4>\n<p>Thanks to Robert Simmon for his help in acquiring and processing the image.<\/p>\n<p>Planet Team (2019).
