{"id":3173,"date":"2011-06-06T07:25:23","date_gmt":"2011-06-06T07:25:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=3173"},"modified":"2011-06-06T07:25:24","modified_gmt":"2011-06-06T07:25:24","slug":"forecasts-for-the-2011-global-landslide-season","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2011\/06\/06\/forecasts-for-the-2011-global-landslide-season\/","title":{"rendered":"Forecasts for the 2011 global landslide season"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The graph below shows the average monthly occurrence of non-seismic, fatality-inducing landslides worldwide for the last eight years or so, based upon the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/tag\/landslide-data\/\">database <\/a>that I collate of mass movements that kill people (<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2010\/02\/12\/maps-of-global-fatal-landslides\/\">maps of the data can be found here<\/a>):<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-3174\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2011\/06\/06\/forecasts-for-the-2011-global-landslide-season\/11_06-landslides-by-month\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3174\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/06\/11_06-landslides-by-month.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"569\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/06\/11_06-landslides-by-month.jpg 569w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/06\/11_06-landslides-by-month-300x158.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 569px) 100vw, 569px\" \/><\/a>The data need to be interpreted a little carefully because of the uneven length of each month, but the seasonality of the occurrence worldwide is really striking.\u00a0 This peak is of course dominated by the weather conditions associated with the northern hemisphere summer &#8211; and in particular the combination of the summer monsoon in South and East Asia, the typhoon season in the NW Pacific and the Hurricane season in the Caribbean.\u00a0 So, at this point it is interesting to look at the long-range forecasts for each of these phenomena to see what might be in store.<\/p>\n<p>So first, the<strong> monsoon in South Asia<\/strong>.\u00a0 This was of course continually in the news last summer due to the floods in Pakistan.\u00a0 Forecasts for the South Asia monsoon are issues by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imd.gov.in\/\">Indian Meteorology Department<\/a>.\u00a0 Their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imd.gov.in\/section\/nhac\/dynamic\/Monsoon_frame.htm\">2011 monsoon page<\/a> provides an update on progress of the monsoon as it develops.\u00a0 Their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imd.gov.in\/section\/nhac\/dynamic\/lrf_eng2011.pdf\">long-range forecast<\/a> (NB &#8211; pdf) is for an average monsoon for India:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>IMD\u2019s long range forecast for the 2011 south-west monsoon season (June to September) is that the rainfall for the country as a whole is most likely to be Normal (96-104% of Long Period Average (LPA)). There is very low probability for season rainfall to be deficient (below 90% of LPA) or excess (above 110% of LPA).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>However, note that landslides are mostly triggered by short duration, intense rainfall (which this forecast does not really address) and that there is huge spatial variability in rainfall patterns.\u00a0 In other words, we will see hotspots of landslides occurring across South Asia, and there is no excuse for complacency. This monsoon forecast will be updated by IMD later this month.<\/p>\n<p>At the moment I cannot find a long-range forecast for the <strong>monsoon in East Asia<\/strong> (anyone?), but much of this area has been in a state of drought.\u00a0 Heavy rainfall, and possible landslides, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.china.org.cn\/2011-06\/05\/content_22717819.htm\">are being forecast<\/a> for this week.<\/p>\n<p>For the <strong>NW Pacific typhoon season<\/strong>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tropicalstormrisk.com\/\">Tropical Storm Risk<\/a> are forecasting a season that is also close to average.
