{"id":31513,"date":"2019-07-15T06:18:14","date_gmt":"2019-07-15T06:18:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=31513"},"modified":"2019-07-15T06:18:14","modified_gmt":"2019-07-15T06:18:14","slug":"godrer-graig-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2019\/07\/15\/godrer-graig-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Godre&#8217;r Graig: risks to a school from a spoil tip landslide"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Godre&#8217;r Graig: risks to a school from a spoil tip landslide<\/p>\n<p>At the end of last week, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npted.org\/schools\/primary\/godrergraig\/Pages\/default.aspx\">Godre&#8217;r Graig Primary School<\/a>, near Pontardawe in South Wales, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/news\/wales-news\/godrergraig-primary-school-closed-landslide-16572182\">was temporarily closed due to the risks of a spoil tip landslide<\/a>.\u00a0 The decision was taken after a survey by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earthsciencepartnership.co.uk\/\">Earth Science Partnership<\/a>,\u00a0 commissioned by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/all-about\/neath-port-talbot\" data-content-type=\"section-topic\" data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\">Neath Port Talbot<\/a> Council, determined that there a medium level risk from a quarry spoil tip near the school. The decision to close the school temporarily is understandable in light of the terrible history of spoil tip landslides in South Wales, including of course the appalling <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2016\/10\/17\/aberfan-disaster-1\/\">Aberfan disaster in 1966<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This Google Earth image, from 2006, shows the site of the school and the hillslope above it:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_31516\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31516\" class=\"size-full wp-image-31516\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2019\/07\/19_07-Godrer-Graig-e1563168783333.jpg\" alt=\"Godre'r Graig landslide\" width=\"640\" height=\"468\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-31516\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Google Earth image of the Godre&#8217;r Graig Primary School, showing the potentially unstable slope above<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>The heavily modified topography, the legacy of mining and quarrying, is clear.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/news\/wales-news\/godrergraig-primary-school-closed-landslide-16572182\">According to news reports<\/a>, <em>&#8220;the risk identified is linked to springs and ground water near the school.
