{"id":31416,"date":"2019-07-03T07:14:45","date_gmt":"2019-07-03T07:14:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=31416"},"modified":"2019-07-03T07:14:45","modified_gmt":"2019-07-03T07:14:45","slug":"mizoram-landslide-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2019\/07\/03\/mizoram-landslide-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Mizoram: three apartment buildings partially collapse after being hit by a landslide"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Mizoram: three apartment buildings partially collapse after being hit by a landslide<\/h4>\n<p>In Mizoram in India, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ndtv.com\/india-news\/mizoram-building-collapse-3-dead-9-injured-as-buildings-collapse-in-aizawl-many-feared-trapped-2063045\">several large residential buildings were struck yesterday by a substantial landslide<\/a>.\u00a0 Three of these buildings underwent collapse of their lower floor, although they fortunately remained upright, killing three people and injuring a further ten.\u00a0 Two of the victims were children. Images of the site suggest a dramatic event &#8211; the best set of images that I have seen are on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastmojo.com\/mizoram\/2019\/07\/02\/mizoram-landslide-destroys-3-building-blocks-3-killed-live\">East Mojo website<\/a>, which includes this overview of the landslide site:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_31421\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31421\" class=\"size-full wp-image-31421\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2019\/07\/19_07-Mizoram-1-e1562135292758.jpg\" alt=\"Mizoram landslide\" width=\"640\" height=\"479\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-31421\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The aftermath of the landslide at Aizawl in Mizoram, India on 2nd July 2019. Image via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastmojo.com\/mizoram\/2019\/07\/02\/mizoram-landslide-destroys-3-building-blocks-3-killed-live\">East Mojo<\/a>.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>The landslide appears to be translational nature and to have occurred in residual soil and weathered rock.\u00a0 Note the smaller landslide scar, with a similar shape, to the right of the site of the slide event yesterday, also directly behind one of the apartment blocks.\u00a0 The image below shows that the three blocks were pushed forwards, with the lower floor collapsing in each case in a manner that is similar to <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2009\/03\/25\/beichuan-photos-of-the-aftermath-of-a-natural-catastrophe\/\">a soft storey failure in an earthquake<\/a>:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_31422\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31422\" class=\"size-full wp-image-31422\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2019\/07\/19_07-Mizoram-2-e1562136067620.jpg\" alt=\"Mizoram landslide\" width=\"640\" height=\"482\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-31422\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The collapse of the lower floor of the apartment blocks after the landslide at Aizawl in Mizoram, India on 2nd July 2019.
