{"id":31157,"date":"2019-06-10T06:14:45","date_gmt":"2019-06-10T06:14:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=31157"},"modified":"2019-06-10T06:14:45","modified_gmt":"2019-06-10T06:14:45","slug":"hidroituango-powerhouse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2019\/06\/10\/hidroituango-powerhouse\/","title":{"rendered":"An image of the state of the Hidtroituango powerhouse"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>An image of the state of the Hidtroituango powerhouse<\/h5>\n<p>A year ago I wrote several times about the major problems being faced by the operators of the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2018\/06\/03\/hidroituango-crisis-6\/\">Hidroituango dam in Colombia<\/a>, which had suffered from <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2018\/06\/11\/hidroituango-9\/\">significant landslides and rock mass failures<\/a>, which in turn drove emergency works to complete the embankment to allow the spillway to be used to manage the lake level.\u00a0 One effect was flooding through the cavern housing the turbines.\u00a0 Since then it has been quite challenging to understand properly the state of play with this facility as work continues to repair the damage.\u00a0 Images have emerged at various points showing the state of the Hidroituango powerhouse, all of which seemed to show substantial levels of damage.\u00a0 Last week, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GaripChile\">Patricia Garip<\/a>, an independent journalist, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GaripChile\/status\/1137195716785446918\">published on Twitter what appears to be the definitive image of the condition of the facility<\/a>.\u00a0 It is quite shocking:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_31162\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31162\" class=\"size-full wp-image-31162\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2019\/06\/19_06-hidroituango-1-e1560145404561.jpg\" alt=\"The Hidroituango powerhouse\" width=\"640\" height=\"853\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-31162\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image of the state of the Hidroituango powerhouse in June 2019. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GaripChile\/status\/1137195716785446918\">Image posted to Twitter<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GaripChile\">Patricia Garip<\/a>.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>Clearly the level of damage is high, with complete destruction to much of the concrete infrastructure, and heave damage and erosion to the remainder.\u00a0 At the far end of the cavern there is a very substantial debris accumulation.\u00a0 It is not clear to me as to whether this is a collapse of the rock mass or sediment deposited as a result of the flooding.\u00a0 Interestingly, there also appears to be considerable amounts of water present on the ceiling and walls of the cavern.
