{"id":3082,"date":"2011-05-24T07:02:28","date_gmt":"2011-05-24T07:02:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=3082"},"modified":"2011-05-24T11:54:19","modified_gmt":"2011-05-24T11:54:19","slug":"new-landslide-susceptibility-map-for-california","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2011\/05\/24\/new-landslide-susceptibility-map-for-california\/","title":{"rendered":"New landslide susceptibility map for California"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.conservation.ca.gov\/cgs\/information\/publications\/ms\/Documents\/MS58.pdf\">Californian Geological Survey has just released a new map<\/a> showing the susceptibility to deep-seated landslides across the whole of the state.\u00a0 The map is based upon an inventory of known landslides in conjunction with data regarding lithology and slope angle:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-3083\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2011\/05\/24\/new-landslide-susceptibility-map-for-california\/11_05-california-1\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3083\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/05\/11_05-California-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"607\" height=\"670\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/05\/11_05-California-1.jpg 759w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/05\/11_05-California-1-272x300.jpg 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 607px) 100vw, 607px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is a susceptibility map, not a hazard map.\u00a0 In other words, it does not take into consideration the occurrence of triggers of the potential landslides, which of course in this area are both intense rainfall and earthquakes.\u00a0 However, of interest is the additional map that has been provided of the distribution of earthquake shaking potential, which is this map (taken from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shakeout.org\/images\/shakepotentialmap48.png\">here<\/a>):<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-3084\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2011\/05\/24\/new-landslide-susceptibility-map-for-california\/11_05-california-2\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3084\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/05\/11_05-California-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"561\" height=\"655\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/05\/11_05-California-2.jpg 561w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/05\/11_05-California-2-256x300.jpg 256w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 561px) 100vw, 561px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Two things jump out regarding the landslide susceptibility map.\u00a0 The first is just how high the susceptibility is across large parts of western California.\u00a0 I suspect that most people don&#8217;t really consider California to have a substantial landslide problem; the opposite is the case of course.\u00a0 The second is the similarity between the shaking potential map and the landslide susceptibility map, which serves to illustrate the key role that tectonic processes play in generating landslide-prone terrain through, for example, uplift and rock fracture.\u00a0 It is also interesting to note the very high landslide susceptibility for Ventura County, on the coast to the northwest of the city of Los Angeles.\u00a0 This was of course the location of the infamous landslides at La Conchita.\u00a0 Of course, the map doesn&#8217;t consider the susceptibility to shallow landslides such as debris flows, and nor does it really deal with the increased landslide susceptibility in coastal areas.
