{"id":30754,"date":"2019-04-16T06:10:13","date_gmt":"2019-04-16T06:10:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=30754"},"modified":"2019-04-16T06:10:13","modified_gmt":"2019-04-16T06:10:13","slug":"hindalco-tailings-failure-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2019\/04\/16\/hindalco-tailings-failure-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Planet Labs Skysat image of the Hindalco tailings failure"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Planet Labs Skysat image of the Hindalco tailings failure<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.planet.com\/\">Planet Labs<\/a> have successfully acquired a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planet.com\/pulse\/tag\/skysat\/\">high resolution SkySat image<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2019\/04\/13\/hindalco-tailings-1\/\">Hindalco Tailings failure in Muri, India, which occurred last week<\/a>.\u00a0 It is interesting to compare this with the pre-failure imagery.\u00a0 This is a Google Earth image of the site, collected on 4th April 2018 &#8211; i.e. almost exactly one year before the collapse:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_30759\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30759\" class=\"size-full wp-image-30759\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2019\/04\/19_04-Hindalco-6-e1555391846926.jpg\" alt=\"Hindalco tailings failure\" width=\"640\" height=\"724\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-30759\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Google Earth image of the site of the Hindalco tailings failure. Planet Labs Skysat image collected 15th April 2019, used with permission.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>The failure appears to have occurred in the retaining structure on the west side, allowing tailings to move to the west and to a lesser degree to the south.\u00a0 Note the large rear scarp of the landslide. In this case the mobility of the tailings has been quite limited, presumably because they are comparatively dry?<\/p>\n<p>A key task will now be to contain the waste prior to the monsoon to prevent larger-scale contamination of the area.\u00a0 At the moment the affected area is quite limited.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the <span class=\"p-content\">Jharkhand State Pollution Control Board has cancelled the consent to operate of the works at Hindalco. Interestingly, there also reports that the retaining wall was designed by IIT Mumbai and IIT Roorkee, who are now under investigation.
