{"id":30576,"date":"2019-03-26T07:36:26","date_gmt":"2019-03-26T07:36:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=30576"},"modified":"2019-03-26T07:36:26","modified_gmt":"2019-03-26T07:36:26","slug":"chimanimani-landslides","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2019\/03\/26\/chimanimani-landslides\/","title":{"rendered":"NASA Earth Observatory imagery of the Chimanimani landslides in Zimbabwe"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>NASA Earth Observatory imagery of the Chimanimani landslides in Zimbabwe<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/earthobservatory.nasa.gov\/images\/144739\/floods-and-landslides-in-chimanimani\">Yesterday NASA posted imagery of the Chimanimani landslides in Zimbabwe<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2019\/03\/20\/cyclone-idai-1\/\">triggered by Cyclone Idai<\/a>.\u00a0 Last week I highlighted that<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2019\/03\/21\/chimanimani-1\/\"> initial imagery suggested that there had been significant levels of landsliding<\/a>; the NASA imagery confirms this.\u00a0 The image below shows the landslides around Chimanimani\u00a0 itself, captured with Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) instrument:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_30580\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30580\" class=\"size-full wp-image-30580\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2019\/03\/19_03-zimbabwe-1-e1553584195401.jpg\" alt=\"Chimanimani landslide\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-30580\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/earthobservatory.nasa.gov\/images\/144739\/floods-and-landslides-in-chimanimani\">NASA Landsat 8 OLI image<\/a> of the Chimanimani landslides in Zimbabwe, triggered by Cyclone Idai.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>The imagery clearly confirms that this area suffered extensive shallow landslides in the upper part of the catchments, which in turn combined to generate channelised debris flows that affected the villages.\u00a0 These landslides have occurred over a wide area, beyond the zone shown in the image above (which has received most of the attention), as seen from the image below showing the area to the southwest of Chimanimani:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_30581\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30581\" class=\"size-full wp-image-30581\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2019\/03\/19_03-zimbabwe-2-e1553584609941.jpg\" alt=\"Chimanimani landslides\" width=\"640\" height=\"537\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-30581\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/earthobservatory.nasa.gov\/images\/144739\/floods-and-landslides-in-chimanimani\">NASA Landsat 8 OLI image<\/a> showing landslides to the southwest of Chimanimani in Zimbabwe, triggered by Cyclone Idai.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>Note also the extensive evidence of sediment-rich floods in the main channel, which illustrates the way in which landslides high in the catchment can cause extensive damage long distances downstream.<\/p>\n<p>The largest of the Chimanimani landslides appears to lie to the east of the town itself:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_30584\" style=\"width: 598px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30584\" class=\"size-full wp-image-30584\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2019\/03\/19_03-zimbabwe-3-e1553584971207.jpg\" alt=\"Chimanimani landslides\" width=\"588\" height=\"474\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2019\/03\/19_03-zimbabwe-3-e1553584971207.jpg 588w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2019\/03\/19_03-zimbabwe-3-e1553584971207-300x242.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 588px) 100vw, 588px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-30584\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/earthobservatory.nasa.gov\/images\/144739\/floods-and-landslides-in-chimanimani\">NASA Landsat 8 OLI image<\/a> showing the largest of the Chimanimani landslides, triggered by Cyclone Idai.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>This is a slightly intriguing feature that will benefit from more detailed investigation.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile work continues to assess the losses from these landslides.\u00a0 On 24th March, <a href=\"https:\/\/city-press.news24.com\/News\/cyclone-idai-rocks-from-mountain-crush-huts-in-zim-20190324\">reports suggested that the known fatalities from the Chimanimani landslides had reached 189<\/a>, although the final total was expected to be double this number.\u00a0 There are some harrowing tales of the events that night; this is an <a href=\"https:\/\/city-press.news24.com\/News\/cyclone-idai-rocks-from-mountain-crush-huts-in-zim-20190324\">account from Chipo Dhliwayo<\/a>:-<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cRocks came from the mountain and crushed our hut; my in-laws\u2019 house was the first to be destroyed. When our hut fell, my husband had gone to help my in-laws,\u201d said Dhliwayo, as Zimbabwe military helicopters with aid and relief arrived at the worst affected areas of Chimanimani days after the tragedy.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI had three children that were sleeping in the house and I managed to rescue only my six-month-old child on my own before my husband arrived back.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWhen he got back, I was crying and trying to move some of the rocks covering our hut to rescue our four-year-old kid, who survived.
