{"id":30515,"date":"2019-03-20T07:15:45","date_gmt":"2019-03-20T07:15:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=30515"},"modified":"2019-03-20T07:15:45","modified_gmt":"2019-03-20T07:15:45","slug":"cyclone-idai-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2019\/03\/20\/cyclone-idai-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Cyclone Idai: evidence of the impact of landslides and debris flows"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Cyclone Idai: evidence of the impact of landslides and debris flows<\/h4>\n<p>As the true magnitude of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-africa-47624156\">likely costs of Cyclone Idai across southern Africa becomes clear<\/a>, some images are emerging that indicate that in some areas landslides may have been a significant part of the problem, in Zimbabwe at least.\u00a0 This is directly indicated in a few <a href=\"https:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/zimbabwe-cyclone-survivors-tearfully-list-dead-relatives-143154674.html\">news reports<\/a> &#8211; for example, it has been widely noted that two boys were killed when a landslide struck the dormitory of a school:-<\/p>\n<p class=\"canvas-atom canvas-text Mb(1.0em) Mb(0)--sm Mt(0.8em)--sm\" data-reactid=\"68\"><em>&#8220;Two pupils and a worker at a secondary school in the area were among those killed after a landslide sent a boulder crashing into their dormitory.\u00a0 Soldiers on Sunday helped rescue the surviving nearly 200 pupils, teachers and staff who had been trapped at the school in Chimanimani.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p data-reactid=\"68\">But reports also suggest that landslide and debris flows might have played a much larger role.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/zimbabwe-cyclone-survivors-tearfully-list-dead-relatives-143154674.html\">The same report indicates that<\/a>:-<\/p>\n<p class=\"canvas-atom canvas-text Mb(1.0em) Mb(0)--sm Mt(0.8em)--sm\" data-reactid=\"45\"><em>&#8220;Agony is etched in Tapiwa Chanyawo\u2019s face as he tells of the night the storm came, a mudslide swept away their home, and his family died.\u00a0 Their home, in the eastern Zimbabwean town of Chimanimani, lay in the path of Idai &#8212; a gigantic tropical cyclone that may have left more than a thousand dead in its wake.\u00a0 &#8220;My father, my mother, my two sisters including the elder one and her child, they all died,&#8221; Chanyawo told AFP from his bed at a local hospital, counting the numbers on his fingers.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p data-reactid=\"45\">This report contains the following image, which includes very clear landslide scars in the hills and, perhaps, the aftermath of a channelised debris flow:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_30520\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30520\" class=\"size-full wp-image-30520\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2019\/03\/19_03-Idai-1-e1553064504392.jpg\" alt=\"Cyclone Idai\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-30520\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The aftermath of Cyclone Idai in Zimbabwe.
