Nakata"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is part 11 of the occasional series on landslides in art.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2011\/04\/11\/landslides-in-art-part-10-charles-emilius-gold\/\">Part 10 is here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For a change, this time I thought I&#8217;d feature a photographic print.\u00a0 The subject is a photograph by John K. Nakata entitled landslide.\u00a0 The artist runs a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sightandsound.com\/\">photographic business<\/a> in California that makes best use of the opportunities provided by the landscape of that part of the world.\u00a0 Unfortunately, no description or notes are associated with the picture, which can be found (and purchased) from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.barewalls.com\/pv-486421_Landslide.html\">Barewalls<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-3047\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2011\/05\/19\/landslides-in-art-part-11-john-k-nakata\/11_05-nakata\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3047\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/05\/11_05-Nakata.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"346\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/05\/11_05-Nakata.jpg 346w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/05\/11_05-Nakata-173x300.jpg 173w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 346px) 100vw, 346px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is a classic example of a sandpile landslide, but the picture actually illustrates a number of really interesting aspects of such landslides.\u00a0 First, it is impossible to judge the scale &#8211; is this a metre or 30 metres long?\u00a0 The problem with judging scale illustrates that in a granular material the features associated with such a process are essentially scale-invariant.\u00a0 Second, even though sand is a granular material, the deposit has still developed clear discontinuities.\u00a0 Third, it is quite easy to pick out a small, post-landslide failure on each side of the main scar, and the small deposit that this has created in each case.\u00a0 Finally, the toe of the landslide on the left side has started to be sculpted, presumably by the wind.<\/p>\n<p>Comments, and suggestions for further editions, welcome.<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The latest version of my occasional series on landslides in art, this time featuring the a photographic print by John K.
