{"id":30441,"date":"2019-03-14T07:23:15","date_gmt":"2019-03-14T07:23:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=30441"},"modified":"2019-03-14T07:23:15","modified_gmt":"2019-03-14T07:23:15","slug":"south-korea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2019\/03\/14\/south-korea\/","title":{"rendered":"Losses from landslides in South Korea"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Losses from landslides in South Korea<\/h4>\n<p>South Korea is a nation that at times has suffered <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2011\/07\/28\/first-images-of-the-korean-landslides-plus-data-on-recent-landslide-losses-in-korea\/\">significant losses from landslides<\/a>.\u00a0 The map below shows fatal landslides in the region from 2004 to 2018, as documented in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nat-hazards-earth-syst-sci.net\/18\/2161\/2018\/\">Froude and Petley (2018)<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2018\/08\/28\/mapping-global-landslides\/\">mapped using our online mapping tool<\/a>:-<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_30446\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30446\" class=\"size-full wp-image-30446\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2019\/03\/19_03-South-Korea-1-e1552546161479.jpg\" alt=\"South Korea\" width=\"640\" height=\"457\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-30446\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Recorded fatal landslides across East Asia from 2004 to 2017, including South Korea, from <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2018\/08\/28\/mapping-global-landslides\/\">Froude and Petley (2018)<\/a>.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>In a new paper in the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/journal\/00137952\"><em>Engineering Geology<\/em><\/a>, my friends <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/scientific-contributions\/2037429379_Su-Gon_Lee\">Su-Gon Lee<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/mike-winter-82b07613\/?originalSubdomain=uk\">Mike Winter<\/a> have documented loss inducing landslides in South Korea from 1970 to 2018 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0013795218319045\">Lee and Winter 2019<\/a>).\u00a0 This is a very useful paper that carefully explains the context of landslides in South Korea (strongly seasonal rainfall, high erosion rates, dense human occupation, etc.). The have counted a total of 1728 fatalities from\u00a0 landslides in the period between 1970 and 2018, a total that was higher than I expected.\u00a0 The paper provides the following really interesting graph of these losses with time:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_30451\" style=\"width: 635px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30451\" class=\"size-full wp-image-30451\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2019\/03\/19_03-South-Korea-2.jpg\" alt=\"South Korea\" width=\"625\" height=\"342\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2019\/03\/19_03-South-Korea-2.jpg 625w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2019\/03\/19_03-South-Korea-2-300x164.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 625px) 100vw, 625px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-30451\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Annual landslide fatalities in South Korea from 1970 to 2018. Graph from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0013795218319045\">Lee and Winter (2018)<\/a>.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>Overall there is a good news story here in that the graph clearly shows a decreasing trend in losses with time, which Lee and Winter (2018) attribute to better landslide management:-<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;This trend may be attributed to the fact that the government of the Republic of Korea has paid more attention to, and expended greater financial resource on, the safety of infrastructure, particularly that pertaining to transport, including landslide mitigation as GDP has increased and the country has become wealthier.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2015\/07\/13\/umyeonsan\/\">The dreadful 2011 debris flows in Seoul<\/a> stand to remind us that we can never be complacent though &#8211; the 58 fatalities that occurred in those events were clearly a significant shock.\u00a0 The authors also describe the non-fatal effects of landslides, noting that the estimated annual property damage is in the range of US$500 million to US$1 billion.\u00a0 Landslides are a problem along transportation infrastructure in particular.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_30452\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30452\" class=\"size-full wp-image-30452\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2019\/03\/PICT0078-e1552547162658.jpg\" alt=\"South Korea\" width=\"640\" height=\"853\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-30452\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A roadside landslide in South Korea.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>The image above, which I took when in South Korea with Su-Gon in 2007, nicely illustrates the problems posed by landslides in South Korea, and the mitigation measures needed to keep the population safe.<\/p>\n<h4>References<\/h4>\n<p>Froude, M.
