{"id":30256,"date":"2019-02-26T07:23:19","date_gmt":"2019-02-26T07:23:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=30256"},"modified":"2019-02-27T05:28:24","modified_gmt":"2019-02-27T05:28:24","slug":"himalayas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2019\/02\/26\/himalayas\/","title":{"rendered":"Two interesting new landslide videos from the Himalayas"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Two interesting new landslide videos from the Himalayas<\/h4>\n<p>Heavy rainfall and snow over the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2011\/05\/16\/mountain-hazards-in-the-himalayas-attabad-glofs-and-earthquakes\/\">Himalayas<\/a> in recent days has triggered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=newssearch&amp;cd=15&amp;cad=rja&amp;uact=8&amp;ved=0ahUKEwjdvfis7djgAhVTThUIHcyDBlQQqQIIWCgAMA4&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.indiatoday.in%2Findia%2Fstory%2Fjammu-srinagar-highway-blocked-due-to-landslides-1465079-2019-02-26&amp;usg=AOvVaw0dVXsiG1Pjj6PHOcyOcBfO\">extensive landslides<\/a>, with many roads being blocked.\u00a0 A couple of videos have emerged showing landslide events, both of which are quite interesting.\u00a0 The first for which there is little information, reportedly occurred in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8FdsB6FhiX8\">Sainj Valley<\/a>.\u00a0 It appears to show a debris flow passing across a road, with a trapped pick up truck.\u00a0 The vehicle is eventually lost to the flow:-<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8FdsB6FhiX8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>The flow is quite interesting in terms of a constant flow of fairly coarse sediment, although the flow rate appears to increase with time:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_30262\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30262\" class=\"size-full wp-image-30262\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2019\/02\/19_02-Sainj-1-e1551163265878.jpg\" alt=\"Sainj valley debris flow in the Himalayas\" width=\"640\" height=\"434\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-30262\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The debris flow in the Sainj valley. Interestingly, it is very unlikely that this would have been evident from the landslide scar and debris pile, which illustrates the challenges of back analysis of landslides without evidence of the morphology of the slope before the failure occurred.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, there has been a number of landslides in the US in recent days, including this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wdbj7.com\/content\/news\/Landslide-causing-road-closures-in-West-Virginia-506271111.html\">example from WV-112, Ingleside Road in West Virginia<\/a>:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_30274\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30274\" class=\"size-full wp-image-30274\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2019\/02\/19_02-West-Virginia-1-e1551164851237.jpg\" alt=\"Sainj landslide\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-30274\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The landslide at Mercer County in West Virginia.
