{"id":3007,"date":"2011-05-15T23:03:03","date_gmt":"2011-05-15T23:03:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=3007"},"modified":"2011-05-15T23:03:04","modified_gmt":"2011-05-15T23:03:04","slug":"images-from-the-sichuan-earthquake-zone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2011\/05\/15\/images-from-the-sichuan-earthquake-zone\/","title":{"rendered":"Images from the Sichuan earthquake zone"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Saturday the organisers of the conference in Chengdu to mark the 3rd anniversary of the Sichuan Earthquake kindly organised for us to spend a day in the Wenchuan earthquake area.\u00a0 The main focus was on the debris flows that have plagued this area since the earthquake; unfortunately this is likely to be the case for years to come.\u00a0 With typical bad timing, the SD card on my camera failed, so I was left with photographs from my useless iPhone (surely the most over-rated piece of technology of the modern age!).\u00a0 Nonetheless, I thought I&#8217;d post a few images here.<\/p>\n<p>First, in many locations desperate measures are needed to protect infrastructure.\u00a0 Here, an electricity substation is threatened by slope problems, such that extensive works have been needed on the slope.\u00a0 These have included the construction of a retaining wall, dentition, and the construction of a shelter above the building.\u00a0 If you look carefully you will see that tyres have been put on the shelter roof to cushion the impacts from debris:<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-3008\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2011\/05\/15\/images-from-the-sichuan-earthquake-zone\/img_0330\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3008\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/05\/IMG_0330-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"666\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/05\/IMG_0330-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/05\/IMG_0330-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/05\/IMG_0330.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is the newly constructed town of Yingxiu, replacing the devastated urban area.\u00a0 The scale of the reconstruction is hugely impressive:<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-3009\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2011\/05\/15\/images-from-the-sichuan-earthquake-zone\/img_0372\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3009\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/05\/IMG_0372-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/05\/IMG_0372-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/05\/IMG_0372-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/05\/IMG_0372.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>However, this area was badly affected by flooding in August 2010, when a landslide blocked the Minjiang River, causing considerable damage to the new town (<a href=\"http:\/\/english.cri.cn\/6909\/2010\/08\/18\/2021s589189_1.htm\">image from here<\/a>):<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-3012\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2011\/05\/15\/images-from-the-sichuan-earthquake-zone\/11_05-yingxiu-1\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3012\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/05\/11_05-Yingxiu-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"313\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/05\/11_05-Yingxiu-1.jpg 500w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/05\/11_05-Yingxiu-1-300x187.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At the moment many of the buildings are empty;
