{"id":30040,"date":"2019-02-05T07:10:49","date_gmt":"2019-02-05T07:10:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=30040"},"modified":"2019-02-05T07:10:49","modified_gmt":"2019-02-05T07:10:49","slug":"cobre-las-cruces-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2019\/02\/05\/cobre-las-cruces-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Cobre Las Cruces, Spain: another massive mining landslide"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Cobre Las Cruces, Spain: another massive mining landslide<\/h4>\n<p>Whilst attention has been focused on the events at <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2019\/02\/01\/brumadinho-tailings-dam-video\/\">Brumadinho in Brazil<\/a>, another massive mining-induced landslide occurred in Spain on 23rd January, this time at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cobrelascruces.com\/?lang=en\">Cobre Las Cruces mine<\/a>. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.manueljesusflorencio.com\/tag\/deslizamiento-cobre-las-cruces\/\">Manuel Jes\u00fas Florencio\u00a0has an excellent article online about the failure<\/a> (in Spanish).\u00a0 This is a very big event, with an estimated volume in the order of 15 million cubic metres (i.e. considerably larger than the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2019\/02\/04\/brumadinho-tailings-dam-landslide\/\">landslide at Brumadinho<\/a>).\u00a0 Fortunately, there were no casualties.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.manueljesusflorencio.com\/tag\/deslizamiento-cobre-las-cruces\/\">Manuel Jes\u00fas Florencio&#8217;s article<\/a> includes this image of the aftermath of the landslide:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_30042\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30042\" class=\"size-full wp-image-30042\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2019\/02\/19_02-Spain-1-e1549348696334.jpg\" alt=\"Las Cruces\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-30042\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The 15 million cubic metre landslide at Las Cruces mine in Spain. Copyright <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planet.com\">Planet Labs<\/a>, used with permission.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/geotecniafacil.com\/deslizamiento-cobre-las-cruces-margas-azules\/\">Geotecniafacil.com has a nice article<\/a> (again in Spanish) about the background to this landslide.\u00a0 It notes that Cobre Las Cruces is the largest open case copper mine in Europe, but that the core deposit is overlain by blue marls that cause may geotechnical problems.\u00a0 It notes that once weathered these materials are extremely weak, with no cohesion and a very low effective friction angle.\u00a0 This is consistent with the failure seen in the images, which seems to have retrogressed a large distance into the slope, implying a low shear plane angle.<\/p>\n<p>Production is expected to be halted for six months, suggesting that this will be an exceptionally expensive event.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.monitor.co.ug\/News\/World\/Landslide-kills-17-Guinea-gold-mine\/688340-4966922-1egp80z\/index.html\">at least 17 people were killed in a landslide in a gold mine at\u00a0Norassoba in Guinea on Sunday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4>Acknowledgement and reference<\/h4>\n<p>Thanks to Carlos Jim\u00e9mez and Joan Rossello for highlighting this event to me.<\/p>\n<p>Planet Team (2019).
