{"id":2981,"date":"2011-05-11T07:30:38","date_gmt":"2011-05-11T07:30:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=2981"},"modified":"2011-05-11T07:30:39","modified_gmt":"2011-05-11T07:30:39","slug":"strange-goings-on-in-rome","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2011\/05\/11\/strange-goings-on-in-rome\/","title":{"rendered":"Strange goings-on in Rome"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Various news agencies (e.g. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-europe-13354988\">the BBC<\/a>) are reporting a strange story this morning about concern in Rome over a &#8220;cataclysmic&#8221; earthquake.\u00a0 The reports note that a rumour has swept through the city that there will be a devastating earthquake on 11th May 2011; the result is that at least some of the population is expected to stay away from Rome on that day just in case.<\/p>\n<p>The origin of the rumour appears to be an urban myth about a prediction made by Italian seismologist Raffaele Bendandi, who promoted the idea that planetary configurations play a key role in determining the occurrence of large earthquakes.\u00a0 Although Bendandi died in 1979, he reportedly made a prediction of a large earthquake in Rome on this day, and hence the concern.<\/p>\n<p>However, of course there is no scientific basis for this prediction.\u00a0 Indeed, even the prediction itself is in doubt &#8211; Bendandi reportedly burnt his notes and records before he died, leaving no more than unclear, fragmentary evidence of his predictions.\u00a0 Scientifically-invalid stories about the role of planetary alignment on earthquakes continue to do the rounds; the last big scare was in <a href=\"http:\/\/2012reportingcenter.webs.com\/apps\/blog\/show\/4010919-nasa-officials-planetary-alignment-of-june-12-may-unleash-massive-earthquake-and-tsunami\">June 2010<\/a>; as usual nothing occurred of course. The frustration is that there is no data to support the idea that planetary alignments are somehow related to earthquake triggering.\u00a0 And even if they were, it is far from clear as to why an earthquake would occur in Italy rather than in one of the many other areas with high levels of stored earthquake strain energy. And even within Italy, the identification of Rome is particularly perplexing &#8211; the national seismic hazard map of Italy below (from <a href=\"http:\/\/zonesismiche.mi.ingv.it\/mappa_ps_apr04\/italia.html\">here<\/a>) shows that parts of country are vulnerable to earthquakes, but that Rome is not an area of particularly high seismic hazard by Italian standards:<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-2982\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2011\/05\/11\/strange-goings-on-in-rome\/11_05-mappa_opcm3519\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2982\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/05\/11_05-mappa_opcm3519.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"359\" height=\"514\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/05\/11_05-mappa_opcm3519.gif 359w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/05\/11_05-mappa_opcm3519-209x300.gif 209w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 359px) 100vw, 359px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As usual with such stories, the real issue is the distraction that this sort of pseudo-science generates.\u00a0 Our emphasis should continue to be on risk reduction through understanding seismic hazard, measures to increase resilience (such as the implementation of building codes), preparing potentially-affected populations and generating emergency plans for when events occur.\u00a0 Prediction is not the answer, even if it were possible.<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A rumour is circulating in Rome that a large earthquake will strike the city in the next few days.
