{"id":29034,"date":"2018-10-23T06:26:47","date_gmt":"2018-10-23T06:26:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=29034"},"modified":"2018-10-23T06:26:47","modified_gmt":"2018-10-23T06:26:47","slug":"jomda-county-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2018\/10\/23\/jomda-county-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Jomda County: a large, valley blocking landslide in Tibet on 11th October"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Jomda County: a large, valley blocking landslide in Tibet on 11th October<\/h4>\n<p>As I noted in <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2018\/10\/22\/yarlung-tsangpo-1-2\/\">my post yesterday regarding the Yarlung Tsangpo landslide in Tibet<\/a>, there was another very large landslide event in that region on 11th October 2018.\u00a0 This landslide locked the Drichu \/ Jimsha River at Bolo Township in Jomda County, although the blockage now appears to have cleared.\u00a0 The landslide was a very substantial rockslide:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_29036\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29036\" class=\"size-full wp-image-29036\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2018\/10\/18_10-Bolo-1-e1540274469885.jpg\" alt=\"Jomda County\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-29036\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The landslide at Bolo Township in Jomda County, Tibet on 11th October 2018. Image via <a href=\"http:\/\/tibetexpress.net\/dri-chu-blocked-by-landslide-in-kham-derge\/\">Caixin<\/a>.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/tibetexpress.net\/dri-chu-blocked-by-landslide-in-kham-derge\/\">Reports suggest<\/a> that the landslide occurred at 4 am local time, and fortunately resulted in no loss of life.\u00a0 Fortunately the lake barrier was overtopped and breached within a couple of days, reducing the downstream danger.\u00a0 The landslide appears to have had reasonably high mobility, spreading both upstream and downstream in the main valley, which will have reduced the height of the barrier:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_29037\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29037\" class=\"size-full wp-image-29037\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2018\/10\/18_10-Bolo-2-e1540275201562.jpg\" alt=\"Jomda County\" width=\"640\" height=\"425\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-29037\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The landslide at Bolo Township in Jonda County, Tibet on 11th October 2018. Image via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.caixinglobal.com\/2018-10-18\/gallery-landslide-resulting-flooding-displaces-thousands-of-tibetans-101336432_1.html\">Caixin.<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tibetanreview.net\/fear-grows-of-second-landslide-barrier-lake-in-tibets-chamdo-city\/\">Some reports suggested that there were fears of a second landslide at this site<\/a>:-<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Even as dangers from a barrier lake formed by a landslide which blocked the Drichu (Chinese: Yangtze River) tributary of Jinsha River at Bolo Township of Jomda County in Tibet\u2019s Chamdo (Qamdo) City receded following a burst through the blockade, another danger keeps growing, reported China\u2019s official Xinhua news agency Oct 14.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;The report cited China\u2019s Ministry of Emergency Management as warning Oct 13 that the possibility of another landslide was growing.
