{"id":28949,"date":"2018-10-12T06:28:17","date_gmt":"2018-10-12T06:28:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=28949"},"modified":"2018-10-12T06:28:17","modified_gmt":"2018-10-12T06:28:17","slug":"bududa-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2018\/10\/12\/bududa-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Bududa in Uganda: landslides kill at least 40 people"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Bududa in Uganda: landslides kill at least 40 people<\/h4>\n<p>Heavy rainfall on Thursday (11th October 2018) triggered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iol.co.za\/news\/africa\/at-least-17-killed-by-landslides-in-eastern-uganda-17443190\">landslides in Bududa District of Uganda<\/a>, with reports suggesting that at least <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newvision.co.ug\/new_vision\/news\/1487495\/bududa-disaster-bodies-recovered\">40 people have been killed<\/a>.\u00a0 Some reports suggest that the toll might be very much higher, with <a href=\"https:\/\/theugandan.com\/2018\/10\/bududa-mudslides-22-confirmed-dead-400-hundred-missing-including-school-kids\/\">The Ugandan stating that up to 400 people might be missing<\/a>.\u00a0 This includes an alarming report about the impact on a school:-<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Over 200 pupils of Shiteteyi Primary School are also missing after the mudslides swept part of their school located at Maludu trading center.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>These reports are unconfirmed as yet.\u00a0 The reports includes a photograph of one of the landslides (although this might be an archive image):-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_28952\" style=\"width: 604px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28952\" class=\"size-full wp-image-28952\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2018\/10\/18_10-bududa-1.jpg\" alt=\"Bududa\" width=\"594\" height=\"395\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2018\/10\/18_10-bududa-1.jpg 594w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2018\/10\/18_10-bududa-1-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 594px) 100vw, 594px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-28952\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">One of the landslides that have killed at least 40 people in the Bududa area of Uganda in the last 24 hours. Image via <a href=\"https:\/\/theugandan.com\/2018\/10\/bududa-mudslides-22-confirmed-dead-400-hundred-missing-including-school-kids\/\">The Ugandan<\/a>.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>Clearly at present the picture is far from clear; hopefully it will clarify in the next few hours.\u00a0 All the indications are that this will be a significant disaster.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of fatalities, the Bududa area of Uganda might be the most disaster prone in Africa.\u00a0 I have previously posted about significant landslides there in <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2011\/08\/30\/serious-landslides-in-uganda\/\">2011<\/a>, with at least 50 fatalities; and <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2012\/06\/25\/first-news-of-another-landslide-accident-in-uganda\/\">2012<\/a>, with about 90 fatalities.\u00a0 There is a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2010_Ugandan_landslide\">report on Wikipedia about a large failure in March 2010<\/a>, with about 100 deaths.<\/p>\n<p>The area affected by these landslides is the flank of Mount Elgon, an extinct shield volcano that reaches an elevation of over 3000 metres.\u00a0 The flanks of the volcano are deeply weathered to laterite, and the area is affected by heavy rainfall events, with an annual total of over 1,800 mm.\u00a0 Humans have heavily modified the landscape, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0341816211002049\">widespread deforestation in the last 25 years<\/a>.\u00a0 This has involved increasing cultivation of the steeper slopes higher up the volcano.
