{"id":28676,"date":"2018-09-19T07:26:53","date_gmt":"2018-09-19T07:26:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=28676"},"modified":"2018-09-24T06:21:14","modified_gmt":"2018-09-24T06:21:14","slug":"kodagu-landslides-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2018\/09\/19\/kodagu-landslides-1\/","title":{"rendered":"The Kodagu landslides in Karnataka, India: Planet Labs imagery"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Kodagu landslides in Karnataka, India: Planet Labs imagery<\/h4>\n<p>On 15th to 17th August, the Kodagu area of Karnataka in SW India suffered exceptional <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2018\/04\/26\/landslides-monsoon-variation-1\/\">monsoon rainfall<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/zeenews.india.com\/karnataka\/heavy-rains-lashes-karnataka-landslides-in-kodagu-district-2133851.html\">inducing floods and landslides<\/a>.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenewsminute.com\/article\/no-link-between-landslides-kodagu-and-earthquake-witnessed-july-say-scientists-87176\">Reports suggest<\/a> that over 200 mm fell per day on three successive days.\u00a0 There were many fatalities and a high level of damage was inflicted.\u00a0 There has been considerable controversy in India as to the cause of the Kodagu landslides, with suggestions ranging from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.downtoearth.org.in\/blog\/kodagu-landslides-not-a-natural-disaster-61472\">environmental degradation<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/city\/bengaluru\/release-of-excess-water-from-dams-led-to-kodagu-landslides-says-govt\/articleshow\/65791132.cms?from=mdr\">release of water from a network of dams<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenewsminute.com\/article\/no-link-between-landslides-kodagu-and-earthquake-witnessed-july-say-scientists-87176\">even a previous earthquake<\/a>.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/city\/mysuru\/expert-team-in-kodagu-to-study-cause-of-landslides\/articleshow\/65587801.cms\">A team has been established to examine the causes<\/a>; it will be interesting to see what they find.<\/p>\n<p>These landslides received comparatively little attention in outside of India, but they were a very substantial event.
