{"id":28529,"date":"2018-09-04T20:54:44","date_gmt":"2018-09-04T20:54:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=28529"},"modified":"2018-09-05T00:08:12","modified_gmt":"2018-09-05T00:08:12","slug":"boulder-roll-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2018\/09\/04\/boulder-roll-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Boulder roll &#8211; a surprising video (updated with location)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Boulder roll &#8211; a surprising video (now updated with the location)<\/h4>\n<p>I have posted previously about the hazards associated with <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2016\/03\/12\/nasty-dancing-rocks\/\">rolling and jumping boulders<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2011\/08\/02\/images-of-landslides-from-the-christchurch-earthquakes-part-2-evil-dancing-boulders\/\">damage that they can cause<\/a>.\u00a0 Generally speaking we think of the greatest hazard being posed by boulders traveling down long, steep slopes, and thus having very high kinetic energy.\u00a0 However, this is not necessarily the case. A video has emerged, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PZkGCzTircY\">and been posted to Youtube<\/a>, from Uttarakhand in the last few days that shows that even boulders without long fall heights can be extremely dangerous:-<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PZkGCzTircY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>This is a very nice example of a boulder roll.\u00a0 There is really not much information on Youtube about where this happened, other than being within Uttarakhand in northern India. But the video includes a location sign, and in a pair of comments below reader Anne Roseveare indicates that these names translate to: Sama, Liti, Tejam and Namik.\u00a0 She indicates that this means that the area can be found in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.co.uk\/maps\/place\/Sama-Liti-Tejam+Rd,+Uttarakhand,+India\/@29.9694837,79.8192885,10z\/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x39a727ee2ad12d0d:0x2e2b6dc9ef08f687!8m2!3d29.9795162!4d80.0919762\">this link to Googlemaps<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The video suggests that this is a deeply weathered slope, which possibly has been cut for the road.\u00a0 The large boulder is released by the slope, and manages to achieve significant speed despite the low fall height.\u00a0 Clearly this would be exceptionally dangerous for road users:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_28534\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28534\" class=\"size-full wp-image-28534\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2018\/09\/18_09-boulder-roll-1-e1536093793522.jpg\" alt=\"boulder roll\" width=\"640\" height=\"393\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-28534\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A still from a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PZkGCzTircY\">Youtube video showing a boulder roll event in Uttarakhand in northern India<\/a>.
