{"id":28450,"date":"2018-08-28T06:09:19","date_gmt":"2018-08-28T06:09:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=28450"},"modified":"2018-08-28T14:52:33","modified_gmt":"2018-08-28T14:52:33","slug":"mapping-global-landslides","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2018\/08\/28\/mapping-global-landslides\/","title":{"rendered":"Mapping global landslides"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Mapping global landslides<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2018\/08\/24\/global-fatal-landslide-occurrence-1\/\">As I noted last week<\/a>, as part of our work on deaths caused by global landslides, my colleague Melanie Froude has been establishing <a href=\"https:\/\/shefuni.maps.arcgis.com\/apps\/webappviewer\/index.html?id=98462998953c4f1fbd7caaa166373f63\">an online tool that allows mapping of that landslides on the database<\/a>.&nbsp; This tool is now online using an ESRI ARCGIS mapping tool.&nbsp; It&#8217;s probably fair to say that at this stage it is a little experimental, and I warn in particular against trying to interpret too much from any individual record.&nbsp; The most difficult element in compiling a database like this is in identifying the precise location of each landslide.&nbsp; In the vast majority of cases the information that we have does not pin the location to a particular slope.&nbsp; Thus, we map the landslide as sitting within an area, the size of which reflects the precision of the report, and from this we distill a single point to display online.&nbsp; In some cases, where the uncertainty is large, we cannot map the landslide.<\/p>\n<p>But the tool does provide a global and regional view of the distribution of losses from landslides.&nbsp; The remarkable unevenness of the distribution of global landslides is clear:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_28453\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28453\" class=\"size-full wp-image-28453\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2018\/08\/18_08-global-landslides-1-e1535434787788.jpg\" alt=\"Global landslides\" width=\"640\" height=\"321\"\/><p id=\"caption-attachment-28453\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The distribution of global landslides.
