{"id":28298,"date":"2018-07-18T06:21:24","date_gmt":"2018-07-18T06:21:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=28298"},"modified":"2018-07-18T06:21:24","modified_gmt":"2018-07-18T06:21:24","slug":"hidroituango-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2018\/07\/18\/hidroituango-update\/","title":{"rendered":"Hidroituango: an update"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Hidroituango: an update<\/h4>\n<p>I have not posted about <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2018\/06\/21\/hidroituango-11\/\">Hidroituango<\/a> (in Colombia) in the last few weeks, although the crisis has certainly not ended there.\u00a0 Seasonal changes in weather have meant that the inflows from the upper reaches of the catchment have reduced, allowing a slow reduction in water level.\u00a0 This has provided a welcome opportunity for the continued improvement of the dam, which is of course good news.<\/p>\n<p>However, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lafm.com.co\/colombia\/hidroituango-identifican-deterioros-en-casa-de-maquinas\">LAFM reports<\/a> that last week a seismic event was recorded from within the power house cavern, which is interpreted as being a rockfall event.\u00a0 This has reduced the flow of water by 5 to 10%, with fears that this might become worse.\u00a0 One wonders about the state of the power house cavern, and indeed the remainder of the underground excavations, in light of these events.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, further imagery of the site has become available.\u00a0 Last week, <a href=\"https:\/\/api.planet.com\/\">Planet Labs<\/a> collected a high resolution image of the site using their 0.8 metre SkySat instrument:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_28302\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28302\" class=\"size-full wp-image-28302\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2018\/07\/ituango_s108_20180707T182403Z_crop-e1531893178645.jpg\" alt=\"Hidroituango\" width=\"640\" height=\"429\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-28302\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/api.planet.com\/\">Planet Labs<\/a> SkySat image of the Hidroituango site, collected on 9th July 2018 and used with permission.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>This highlights in particular the continued evolution of the slope failures just upstream of the dam, on the right bank:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_28304\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28304\" class=\"size-full wp-image-28304\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2018\/07\/18_07-Hidroituango-Planet-Labs-e1531893368562.jpg\" alt=\"Hidroituango\" width=\"640\" height=\"686\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-28304\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/api.planet.com\/\">Planet Labs<\/a> SkySat image of the slope failures upstream of the Hidroituango dam.
